The Atlantic League’s South Division second half pennant race has been declared a tie between the Gastonia Honey Hunters and the High Point Rockers. Due to unavoidable weather circumstances, the Rockers played two fewer second half contests than the Honey Hunters.
High Point finished the second half at 37-24 over 61 games. Gastonia went 38-25 in 63 contests. Less than 4/1000ths of a percentage point separated the two clubs, thus the co-championship.
The tie in the South Division race has no bearing on the Atlantic League’s postseason playoffs. Gastonia, with the league’s best record among the non-playoff teams, earned a bid as the wild card team as provided for in the ALPB Rule Book. High Point gained entry to the postseason by virtue of its first half South Division championship.
“A tie is unprecedented in the league where the number of games played is different,” said ALPB President Rick White. “With both clubs having secured playoff berths, it is only right to declare Gastonia and High Point as second half co-champs.”
