HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point Rockers and Gastonia Honey Hunters split a doubleheader Tuesday night at Truist Point. The Rockers took game one by a score of 8-2 as Mickey Jannis won his 12^th game of the year while Gastonia claimed the nightcap 7-0.

Gastonia maintained its 3.5 game lead over the Rockers. The Honey Hunters are 33-18 in the second half in the Atlantic League’s South Division with the Rockers in second at 29-21.

In the opener, Jannis set the club record for wins in a season with his 12^th victory, a three-hitter. The knuckleballer allowed just one hit through the first five innings before allowing a solo homer to Jack Reinheimer in the sixth and another solo shot by David Washington in the seventh. Jannis walked two and struck out six in going the distance for the first time this season.

Jannis was supported by a nine-hit attack from the High Point offense. The Rockers scored in the first on a solo homer by Ryan Grotjohn then added four runs in the fourth. Shed Long, Jr. doubled home a run to put the Rockers up 2-0. With two men on, D.J. Burt lined a single up the middle that centerfielder Zach Jarrett overran, allowing Burt to circle the bases, and driving in two more runs and giving the Rockers a 5-0 lead.

Brian Parreira hit a massive three-run homer in the seventh to give the Rockers the 8-2 win.

In game 2, Gastonia starter Brett Daniels (W, 6-1) and a pair of relievers held the Rockers to two hits in a 7-0 Honey Hunter win. Grotjohn hit a squibber down the third base line that stayed fair as he beat it out for an infield single in the second inning. He added a two-out single in the fourth.

Reinheimer hit two more home runs in the nightcap and drove in three to lead Gastonia’s 10-hit attack. Mitch Atkins (L, 1-3) went four innings and allowed just three hits and two runs while walking two and striking out four.

Game three of the four-game series with Gastonia is slated for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday, September 6 at Truist Point. The game will be streamed live on FLO Baseball and also available on the Mixlr app.

Lancaster 9, Staten Island 3

Trayvon Robinson cracked a three-run double in the bottom of the third to lead the Lancaster Barnstormers to a 9-3 victory over the Staten Island FerryHawks in the opener of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

With the win, the Barnstormers remained one game ahead of Southern Maryland in the North Division race.  York, which lost to Southern Maryland, trails Lancaster by two while Staten Island has dropped to five back.  All four teams have 11 games remaining on the schedule.

Lancaster trailed, 3-1, heading into the bottom of the third.  Trace Loehr opened the inning with a single up the middle off Jesse Remington (6-6) and moved to second on a walk to Melvin Mercedes.  Yeison Coca dropped a bunt back to the mound on a 1-2 offering.  Remington charged the play but lost his footing as Coca streaked across first on an infield single.  League RBI leader Andretty Cordero cut the lead to 3-2 with a long sacrifice fly to right center.  Wilson Garcia lined a base hit to left to knock home the tying run.  Chad Sedio drew a walk to load the bases before Robinson drove a ball beyond center fielder Ricardo Cespedes to clear the bases.  Robinson was thrown out at third base for the second out of the inning.

The Barnstormers would tack three more runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth.  Loehr reached on a one-out throwing error by shortstop Angel Aguilar and took second on a passed ball.  Mercedes walked, and Coca brought home Loehr with a single to right with Mercedes thrown out in a run down between second and third.  Cordero launched a two-out single off the wall in right center, sending Coca around to score from first.  After Garcia walked, Sedio singled to right center for the 9-3 lead.

Dominic DiSabatino (4-8) went 5 1/3 innings on four hits and three runs.  The right-hander allowed a three-run homer to DH Brandon Pugh with two outs in the second before pitching scoreless baseball his final 3 2/3 innings.  Brian Marconi and Bret Clarke fired 3 2/3 shutout innings to complete the victory.

Cordero and Garcia had three hits apiece for Lancaster out of the club’s total of 13.

Brent Teller (10-6) will make the start on Wednesday against lefty Ryan Hartman (5-6).  Fans may tune into FloBaseball at 6:25.

NOTES:  Cordero extended a hitting streak to a club-high 16 for the season…He finished the night at .343…Garcia has hit safely in six straight, going 14-for-23…The last 13 hits have been singles…Robinson has knocked in 11 runs in his last nine games…DiSabatino’s win was his first since beating the FerryHawks on June 10^th and his 21^st as a Barnstormer…Lancaster had five runners thrown out on the bases in the game.

Long Island 16, Spire City 4

FREDERICK, MD – On a scorching evening in Frederick, the only thing hotter was the Long Island offense on Tuesday, knocking 23 hits en route to a 16-4 win over the Ghost Hounds.

Carlos Castro opened the scoring with a single in the second inning against Dustin Beggs, which was followed by RBI singles from Scott Kelly and Lew Ford.

Luke Becker put the Ghost Hounds on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a homer off of Ducks starter Kyle Lobstein. Becker would take Lobstein deep again in the fourth. Kole Cottam had the third Ghost Hound solo homer of the night in the third.

The Ducks continued to mount big innings, scoring four in the third, three in the second, and three separate two run innings.

Carlos Castro led the way with a five hit night, driving in four including a ninth inning home run. Lew Ford followed with a four hit night of his own.

Nate Peden pitched the final two innings for the Ghost Hounds, striking out four. This included striking out the side in order in the eighth.

Charleston 3, Lexington 2

(September 5, 2023 – Waldorf, Md.):  The York Revolution saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Atlantic League all-time wins leader Daryl Thompson who turned in a vintage performance on Tuesday evening with a 111-pitch complete game shutout as the Revs fell to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, 6-0 at Regency Furniture Stadium. The win streak fell two shy of matching a franchise record set earlier this season as the Revs sit two games back of first place with 11 to play in the regular season.

Thompson (6-2) earned the 97th win of his Atlantic League career, doing so with his 20th complete game and sixth shutout, all in the last three seasons. It was just the sixth complete game shutout in the league this season. The 37-year-old allowed eight hits (six singles) and held the Revs hitless in 11 at-bats with runners in scoring position, improving to 10-13 lifetime against York.

Revs starter J.T. Hintzen worked around a leadoff double in the first inning, but Alex Crosby’s leadoff double in the second led to the game’s first run as Crosby scored on a sac fly by Phil Caulfield.

The Crabs plated another run with two outs in the third when Hintzen was unable to handle second baseman Richard Urena’s throw covering at first base. Crosby was credited with an RBI infield hit on the play as the Crabs led 2-0.

Hintzen was an out away from keeping it a 2-0 game through the sixth, but Caulfield connected on a two-out, two-run homer down the right field line to double the Crabs lead to 4-0. Michael Baca followed with a single and advanced on a passed ball before scoring on Jack Sundberg’s single up the middle to make it 5-0.

Southern Maryland added one more in the seventh as Braxton Lee tripled off the left center fence and scored on a sac fly to right by Khalil Lee as the Crabs’ lead reached its final margin.

Thompson did not allow two hits in the same inning until the top of the ninth when Trey Martin and Urena led off with base hits, but the right hander retired the next three to finish the complete game, handing the Revs just their third shutout defeat of the season.
