York 6, High Point 4

(September 3, 2023 – High Point, NC):  The York Revolution won their sixth consecutive game, defeating the High Point Rockers 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Truist Point. The winning streak is the second-longest of the year for the Revs behind a franchise record nine-gamer during the first half. York remains tied for second place, just two games out of first with 13 to play in the regular season.

It is a third consecutive series win for the Revs who have taken the first three at High Point, primed to go for a four-game sweep on Monday. It is just the second series win all-time for the Revs at Truist Point, as they’ve now won eight of 10 and nine of the last 12 games overall.

The Revs used four long balls to propel the offense which came in support of a strong seven innings from starter Andrew Cabezas who picked up the victory.

York struck first in the top of the first inning, using three consecutive singles to produce the game’s first run. Tomo Otosaka served a one-out single to center to set the table and Drew Mendoza followed with a base hit to left center. With runners at the corners, Nellie Rodriguez dribbled a ground ball RBI single through the right side of the infield for the game’s first run.

Richard Urena slammed the Revs’ first homer of the day and his 16th of the year, a solo shot to left center leading off the second, making it a 2-0 lead. Urena now has eight RBI and eight runs scored during the six-game winning streak.

Cabezas’ first four innings were scoreless, but the Rockers pieced together a game-tying spurt in the fifth as Shed Long Jr. drove an RBI double to left center and scored on D.J. Burt’s bloop single to center, squaring things at 2-2.

The Revs responded right away as Trey Martin clobbered a solo homer to dead center off the batter’s eye in the top of the sixth, giving York a 3-2 lead on his 16th of the season.

Trent Giambrone connected on a solo homer to left center in the top of the seventh, his 22nd of the year, briefly tying Rodriguez for the team lead and pulling within one of matching a career high as the lead grew to 4-2.

Rodriguez went back in front in the team’s home run race, drilling an opposite field two-run shot off the videoboard in right with two outs in the seventh to expand the lead to 6-2. It was Rodriguez’ 23rd of the season and 74th of his Revs career, tying Melky Mesa for second all-time in franchise history.

Long Jr. singled home a run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Cabezas (2-4) fanned Burt to close his afternoon with his season high-tying seventh strike out against no walks. His seven-inning effort was his longest since going all nine for Cedar Rapids in a one-hit shutout on July 6, 2019 at Quad Cities.

The Rockers pieced together three singles against Will Carter in the bottom of the eighth with Dai-Kang Yang driving in a run to make it 6-4, but Carter froze pinch-hitter Emmanuel Tapia on a 98.9 mile per hour fastball to finish the inning, striking out the side.

High Point moved the tying run into scoring position with two outs in the ninth against Carlos Espinal after Long Jr. doubled, Burt walked, and both advanced on stolen bases, but Espinal struck out cleanup hitter Zander Wiel to preserve the nail-biting victory with his first save of the season and 15th of his pro career.

Lancaster 10, Long Island 8

On June 27, the Long Island Ducks released Anthony Peroni.

He got even on Sunday afternoon.

Peroni delivered three RBI singles as the Lancaster Barnstormers defeated the Long Island Ducks, 10-8, in the third game of a four-game weekend series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark in Central Islip, NY.

The Lancaster catcher singled home the game’s first run with a two-out single off Ian Clarkin (3-4) in the top of the third inning.  He added another RBI hit in the third and capped Lancaster’s 15-hit performance with a single up the middle with two outs in the ninth.

Lancaster would take an 8-0 lead through the first three innings.  Melvin Mercedes followed both RBI singles by Peroni with one of his own.  Andretty Cordero singled home two more in the second while Wilson Garcia picked up another.  Lancaster added the eighth run of the day on a throwing error.

The rest of the afternoon was spent fending off perpetual attacks by the Ducks.  They scored four in the bottom of the third off Matt Swarmer (3-1), all with two outs, three coming on Carlos Castro’s seventh homer of the year.  Joe DeCarlo’s two-out double in the sixth was followed by Jonathan Guzman’s RBI single into center.  Swarmer left after walking Trent Taylor.  Brandyn Sittinger entered and walked Scott Kelly to load the bases before Ruben Tejada popped to second to end the inning.

After a Trayvon Robinson solo homer in the top of the inning, Sittinger ran into trouble of his own in the seventh.  Alex Dickerson drew a leadoff walk and went to third on the third single of the day for 47 year-old Lew Ford.  Sittinger struck out the next two and had Joe DeCarlo at 1-2 but walked him to load the bases.  Guzman again singled into center to score two before pinch hitter Sam Travis hit into a force play to end the inning.

Peroni gave the Barnstormers a bit more of a cushion with his single in the ninth, and Mike Adams earned his 11^th save despite allowing a run in the bottom of the ninth.

Lancaster will send Nile Ball (7-6) to the mound on Monday at 1:30 against right-hander Justin Alintoff (2-2).  Fans may tune into the game on FloBaseball at 1:30.

NOTES:  Cordero extended his hitting streak to 14…Mercedes and Robinson also had three hits on the afternoon…Swarmer won his third straight start…Robinson’s last four homers have been right-handed…Chris Proctor has consecutive multi-hit games…Lancaster played for the fourth straight game without Ariel Sandoval, who was injured on his highlight reel catch against Charleston on Wednesday.

Spire City 4, Lexington 3

Spire City blasted three solo homers during a three-run fourth inning in defeating Lexington 4-3 at Counter Clocks Field. Raudy Read, Kole Cottam and Craig Dedelow all hit homers in the inning.

Henry Sosa struck out nine in six innings of work in improving to 2-2 on the year. Mike Kickham fell to 1-7 with the loss.

So. Maryland 11, Gastonia 2

Southern Maryland broke open a 2-0 game with a five-run fifth inning and went on to defeat Gastonia 11-2, snapping the Honey Hunters’ six-game winning streak. Khalil Lee slapped a two-run single and Jimmy Kerrigan added a three-run homer in the fifth. For Kerrigan, it marked his fourth consecutive game with a homer. So. Maryland’s Ian Kahaloa earned the win to improve to 10-7 by striking out seven in 6.1 innings of work. Zach Mort (12-3) took the loss as he tried to become the Atlantic League’s first 13-game winner.

Staten Island 6, Charleston 3 (Game 1, 8 innings)

Staten Island scored three times in the top of the eighth to claim a 6-3 win over Charleston in the opening game of a doubleheader. The Ferry Hawks used a throwing error, a wild pitch and an RBI single by Kevin Krause to break the 3-3 and claim the win. Six Staten Island pitchers combined to three-hit the Dirty Birds. Justin O’Conner’s second inning single was the last hit of the game for Charleston. Pedro Payano (2-4) earned the win in relief.

Charleston 1, Staten Island 0 (Game 2, 8 innings)

Game two also went extra innings and Charleston won it in walk-off fashion when Staten Island pitcher Anthony Quattrocchi threw a wild pitch that allowed Yefri Perez to score from third. Staten Island starter Nick Beardsley threw seven innings and allowed just two hits while walking five. Charleston’s Josh Martin (3-0) earned the win in relief of Colt Webb who fanned eight and allowed just four hits over seven innings.
