Lancaster 9, High Point 3

The Lancaster Barnstormers knocked out seven doubles on Tuesday evening to defeat the High Point Rockers, 9-3, in the opener of a three-game series at Truist Point.

Lancaster is now 10-5 in the second half, trailing York by percentage points for the top spot in the North.

The flurry of doubles started immediately as Melvin Mercedes took Jheyson Manzueta (3-1) into the right field corner to open the game. One out later, Andretty Cordero found the gap in right center. With two outs, Chad Sedio drove another two-bagger over the head of left fielder Michael Martinez for a 2-0 lead.

For the second straight start, Jeff Bain (2-0) found trouble only in the third inning. The right-hander retired seven of the first eight Rockers before Michael Russell singled up the middle. Shed Long, Jr. tripled into the right field corner before D.J. Burt was hit by a pitch. Ben Aklinski’s double down the left field line tied the game, and High Point would take its only lead of the night on a sacrifice fly by Beau Taylor.

Manzueta retired 10 straight before yielding a two-out single to center by Trace Loehr in the fifth. Mercedes doubled to right center to tie the game. Yeison Coca sliced a double inside the left field line to produce the go-ahead run, and Cordero made it 5-3 with a single through the right side.

Jack Conley keyed a two-run seventh with a double off the glove of Long at second, who was playing at the edge of the infield grass with designated runner Shawon Dunston, Jr. at third. Cordero delivered the final blow with an RBI double to deep left in the ninth, the only hit of the inning

Bain worked six innings, yielding seven hits and the three runs. He walked one and struck out four. Brandyn Sittinger, Zach Warren and Nick Duron threw a scoreless inning of relief.

NOTES: Cordero set a club record with 187 RBI over two seasons, breaking a mark previously held by Aaron Herr…He also has 286 hits during that time in 207 games played…He has a 13-game hitting streak, his longest in a Lancaster uniform…Joseph Carpenter went 1-for-4 to stretch his hitting streak to 15 games, the longest by a Barnstormer this season…Coca is 16-for-16 stealing bases.

Gastonia 10, Staten Island 2

The FerryHawks lost to the Gastonia Honey Hunters by a score of 10-2 on Tuesday night in Staten Island. This one slipped away quickly and the FerryHawks just couldn’t seem to climb back. 

Gastonia got started early, plating 3 runs in the 1st to grab a 3-0 lead out of the gate. From there, the visiting club piled on 7 more runs throughout the course of this contest to make it 10-0 entering the 9th. 

In the bottom of the 9th, the FerryHawk bats seemed to catch some fire as they scored 2 but it was too late for them as they dropped this one, 10-2. Rutgers product and New Jersey native, Chris Brito continued his dominance as he ripped two base hits to keep his average hovering near .500 since joining the FerryHawks. 

Tomorrow the FerryHawks welcome the New York State Little League teams that have flocked to Staten Island to participate in the 12s All-Star Tournament as they continue on their path to Williamsport for the Little League World Series! Former Yankee and World Series MVP, Hideki Matsui will be in attendance as he hosts an exclusive pregame clinic for select District 24 little leaguers. 

Long Island 3, Spire City 0

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 25, 2023) – The Long Island Ducks shut out the Spire City Ghost Hounds 3-0 in seven innings on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark. 

Both teams exchanged zeroes until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Ducks plated two runs against Ghost Hounds starter David Kubiak on Alex Dickerson’s RBI groundout to third base and Brian Goodwin’s RBI single to right field. A leadoff solo home run to left by Wilson Ramos in the fifth extended the Ducks advantage to three. 

Ducks starter Stephen Tarpley (4-5) earned the win, tossing five and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out five. Kubiak (6-4) took the loss, giving up three runs on six hits over six innings with two strikeouts. Kevin Quackenbush picked up his 10th save of the season with a 1-2-3 seventh inning. 

Alejandro De Aza led the Ducks offensively with a pair of hits. 

The Ducks and Ghost Hounds continue their three-game set on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Leo Rosales Oversized Baseball Cards as part of the 2013 Championship 10th Anniversary Series. It’s also a Waddle In Wednesday, and fans will be able to enjoy a $10 off special on Ducks Patriotic T-Shirts at the Waddle In Shop throughout the game. Right-hander Matt Solter (4-4, 5.56) takes the mound for the Ducks against Ghost Hounds lefty Jake Fisher (1-4, 5.26).

So. Maryland 7, Lexington 5

Charleston 5, York 3

(July 25, 2023 – Charleston, WV):  The York Revolution dropped the opening game of a 10-game road trip, 5-3 in 10 innings to the Charleston Dirty Birds on Tuesday evening at GoMart Ballpark. The Revs fall to 9-4 in the second half with the loss and back into a virtual tie for first place.

The early portion of the game was marred by two delays to repair a broken artificial mound, one of nearly 15 minutes in the first inning and another one of nearly half an hour in the top of the fourth.

The Revs plated the game’s first run in the top of the second inning when Ryan January was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in a run on his league leading 16th HBP of the season.

York starter Andrew Cabezas held Charleston to just one hit through the first four innings, but the Dirty Birds tied the game in the fifth when Jalen Miller served a two-out RBI single into right center, evening things at 1-1.

The Revs pounded their way back in front with a pair of solo homers in the top of the sixth. Richard Urena crushed his ninth of the season on a drive to right, and Alejandro Rivero drilled an opposite field shot to right as the Revs went ahead, 3-1.

Cabezas allowed just one run on three hits over six strong innings, but Charleston rallied with two runs off reliever Denson Hull in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game again courtesy of a bloop RBI single to right by Miller and a sac fly to left off the bat of Diego Goris, squaring things at 3-3.

York’s offense was held without a hit after the sixth, while Zach Neff and Will McAffer worked scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth to send the game to extras.

The Revs loaded the bases in the top of the tenth after a hit by pitch of Tomo Otosaka and a walk to Drew Mendoza, but lefty Edison Suriel (2-2) escaped on an inning-ending double play.

Telvin Nash connected on the third pitch from rookie Nick Parker (0-1), lining a walk-off two-run homer to right in the bottom of the 10th to close it out.

The Revs fall to 4-6 at GoMart Ballpark, having dropped five of the last six in Charleston. The Revs also suffer their third walk-off loss all year (two in Charleston) and slip to 1-2 in extra-inning games. It was their first extra inning road game since last June as their previous seven extra-inning contests had all been played in York.

York lefty Nick Raquet (8-6, 3.80) faces Charleston southpaw Danny Wirchansky (3-3, 3.32) on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and FloBaseball.TV beginning at 6:15 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.

Notes: Revs leadoff man Trent Giambrone had a 10-game hitting streak halted; he batted .500 (22-for-44) on the streak and is one of just two players in the league this season with three hitting streaks of 10 games or longer, joining Spire City’s Jose Marmolejos. Rivero (2-for-4) is now 6-for-9 over his last two games.

Roster Update: The Revs signed Dallastown grad Nick Parker who made his pro debut on the mound in Tuesday’s contest. Parker wrapped up his college career last month at University of Virginia, pitching for the Cavaliers in the College World Series after spending the season as their Saturday starter. Parker began his college career at Coastal Carolina following a star-studded career at Dallastown where he led the Wildcats to three league titles, a district championship in 2017, and a berth in the 2017 6A state championship game. He was the YAIAA Player of the Year Division I Player of the Year as a senior. RHP Pedro Vasquez was temporarily placed on the Inactive List to make room.
