York 16, Spire City 5

FREDERICK, MD – After a rally that concluded in a post-midnight walk off, the Spire City Ghost Hounds returned to the field on Sunday, debuting their new teal uniforms, but were unable to record the sweep of the York Revolution, dropping the series finale by a 16-5 score.  

York got the scoring started in the first inning, launching two home runs with one out. First it was Jacob Rhinesmith who hit a solo shot, followed two batters later by a two run Drew Mendoza blast to make it 3-0.  

Spire City started to chip away in the bottom half on a Jose Marmolejos single, but York quickly got that run right back when Troy Stokes Jr went deep in the third.  

Raudy Read singled in the third, and Leobaldo Cabrera hit his league leading 18^th home run in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-3, but that was as close as the Ghost Hounds would get on the afternoon.  

Trying to battle through the sixth inning, David Kubiak allowed a three-run shot to Nellie Rodriguez that would break the game open, putting York ahead 7-3. A Jhon Nunez single in the eighth made it 8-3, before York exploded for a huge ninth inning. 

After two walks and a wild pitch, Drew Mendoza singled home a run before Richard Urena walked to load the bases. After Max Tannenbaum replaced Harold Myles, Nellie Rodriguez was plunked to knock in another run. A Trey Martin single and Jhon Nunez groundout combined to score three more runs, before the big blow came via a three run home run from Trent Giambrone. When all was said and done, York had put up an eight spot in the top of the ninth, blowing the game open to a 16-3 margin. 

Leobaldo Cabrera blasted a two-run home run for his second of the game in the ninth, but it was too little, too late for the Ghost Hounds, as they fell in the series finale.  

They will now embark on a seven-game road trip that includes three games in Charleston and four in Lexington before returning home to close the first half against the Honey Hunters.  

High Point 6, So. Maryland 4
WALDORF, Md. – High Point Rockers catcher Brian Parreira blasted a three-run homer in the seventh inning to erase a 2-0 deficit as the Rockers went on to defeat Southern Maryland 6-4 Sunday afternoon at Regency Furniture Stadium. The win, coupled with a Gastonia loss, moved the Rockers back into a tie for first place in the Atlantic League’s South Division.

Both the Rockers and Honey Hunters stand at 36-16 on the year after Gastonia dropped a 7-2 decision at Staten Island on Sunday. The two teams will meet in a critical three-game series at Gastonia’s CaroMont Health Park Tuesday through Thursday this week.

On Sunday, So. Maryland sent veteran righty Daryl Thompson to the mound. The Atlantic League’s all-time leader in wins and strikeouts, Thompson is the three-time reigning league Pitcher of the Year. Thompson shut out the Rockers for the first six innings, allowing just three hits while his Blue Crabs built a slow and steady 2-0 lead off Rockers starter Mickey Jannis.

Scoreless until the bottom of the third, So. Maryland’s Jack Sundberg slugged a two-run double to right and Philip Caulfield tripled to center on a ball that Ben Aklinski dove for but could not come up with as the Blue Crabs went up 1-0.

In the fifth, the Blue Crabs took a 2-0 lead when, with runners at first and third, Caulfield grounded back to Jannis who whirled and threw to shortstop Ryan Grotjohn for the out at second but Caulfield beat the return throw to first, allowing Michael Baca to score.

The Rockers scored three times in the seventh as the frame started with a single to left by Beau Taylor. After Daikan Yoh lined out, Michael Martinez singled to right to put runners at first and second, Following a Ben Aklinski strike out, Blue Crab manager Stan Cliburn brought in Jacques Pucheu (L, 0-2) to relieve Thompson. Parreira greeted Pucheu with an opposite field three-run homer to left to give High Point its first lead of the day at 3-2.

The Rockers added three more runs in the eighth when Beau Taylor drove in a pair of runs with a double and then scored on a Martinez groundout, leaving High Point with a 6-2 lead.

The Rockers again received outstanding pitching out of the bullpen. Cam Bedrosian (W, 1-0) took over for Jannis with two on and one out in the bottom of the sixth. He struck out Ian Yetsko and Michael Baca to get the Rockers out of the jam. Lefty Sam Selman struck out the side in order in the seventh. Jameson McGrane allowed a one-out solo homer to Khalil Lee in the eighth as the Blue Crabs pulled to within three at 6-3. Ryan Dull earned the save, his league-leading 10^th of the year, in closing out the game. He allowed a solo homer to Ian Yetsko that accounted for the 6-4 final.

Taylor led the Rockers offensively with three hits, two doubles and a pair of RBI. Parreira had two hits with a single to match his three-run homer.

The Rockers will have Monday off and then start a three-game series at Gastonia. First pitch on Tuesday from CaroMont Health Park is slated for 6:35 p.m.

NOTES: Prior to the game, the Rockers released RHP Liam O’Sullivan and placed OF D.J. Burt and RHP Taylor Guerrieri on the Injured List. High Point also signed C Robbie Kellerman who was with the club earlier in the the week… High Point now has an 8-4 series lead over So. Maryland including a 5-1 mark on the road… High Point is 3-3 on the year vs. Gastonia, going 2-1 at home and 1-2 at Gastonia.

Staten Island 7, Gastonia 2

The Staten Island FerryHawks defeated the Gastonia Honey Hunters by a score of 7-2 on Sunday afternoon. This was a much needed win for the Hawks as they head out on the road looking to keep the momentum going.

Gastonia opened up the scoring when they picked up a run in the 3^rd on an RBI single to left field. Outside of that, FerryHawks starter Ivan Pineyro (3-2) posted a clean outing with a line of 5 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts.

In the 5^th inning, the FerryHawks capitalized on some inconsistent pitching from Gastonia. With the bases loaded, the Honey Hunters pitching staff issued back-to-back walks to give the FerryHawks a 2-1 lead. Angel Aguilar, with the bases still jammed, ripped a double into the gap that brought home 3 runs and extended the lead to 5-1. Aguilar was then immediately brought home by a single off the bat of Staten Island native, Kevin Krause.

In the 7^th, Krause struck again when he drove home Garrett Kueber to make it 7-2 FerryHawks. Scoreless appearances from Alex Katz, Pedro Payano, and Williams Ramirez kept Gastonia at bay and helped the FerryHawks wrap this one up 7-2 against the first place Honey Hunters.

The FerryHawks will head on the road before returning home on July 4^th, so bring your friends and family and help celebrate America’s Birthday with the FerryHawks! The best view in baseball gets even better as their 6:30 game will be followed by their biggest fireworks show of the year!

Lancaster 11, Long Island 5

(Lancaster, Pa., June 25, 2023) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers 11-5 in a rain-shortened game on Sunday afternoon, the rubber game of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Lancaster took a 3-0 lead in the third inning against Ducks starter Joe Iorio on an error that plated Trace Loehr, Andretty Cordero's RBI double and Wilson Garcia's RBI single. Back-to-back two-out doubles by Alex Dickerson and Brian Goodwin off Barnstormers starter Brent Teller got the Ducks on the scoreboard.

Long Island closed to within 3-2 in the fifth when Tzu-Wei Lin tripled down the right field line and scored on Ruben Tejada's RBI single to right. However, a seven-run fifth inning gave Lancaster a 10-2 lead. RBI singles by Jack Conley, Yeison Coca and Loehr plus a two-run single by Marshall Rich highlighted the frame.

Jake Hoover added an RBI single in the sixth for Lancaster’s 11th run. Alejandro De Aza closed the gap to 11-5 in the seventh with a three-run homer to right-center before the skies opened up. The game called approximately 30 minutes later due to inclement weather.

Teller (4-3) picked up the win, tossing six innings of two-run ball, allowing seven hits while striking out four. Iorio (3-5) took the loss, conceding 10 runs (seven earned) on 14 hits and a walk in five innings with four strikeouts.

De Aza led the Ducks offense with two hits, three RBIs and a run. Goodwin added two hits and an RBI, while Alex Dickerson had two hits and a run.

The Ducks return home on Tuesday night to begin a three-game set against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Ducks Foam Fingers, courtesy of Drake’s Cakes. It’s also a Triple Play Tuesday!
