HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point’s Daikan Yoh hit a pair of homers to lead the Rockers to a 10-0 win over Lexington on Wednesday night at Truist Point. The game was called with two outs in the top of the seventh.

The Rockers improved to 33-15 with the win while Gastonia is 33-14 after beating Lancaster 9-7 on Wednesday night. The Rockers remain a half-game back of the Honey Hunters in the Atlantic League’s South Division.

The Rockers banged out 10 hits on the night including three homers while three High Point pitchers held the Counter Clocks to just five hits.

The Rockers struck first when Michael Russell led off the game with a walk off Lexington starter Pat Ledet. After Shed Long, Jr. drew a walk, Zander Wiel singled to load the bases. Beau Taylor then delivered a sacrifice fly to center that scored Russell.

With one out in the second, Ledet walked Joe Johnson before giving up a single to Russell that was followed by an RBI single from Long, Jr. With the bases loaded, Ben Aklinski flew out to second as Russell scored on the sac fly to give the Rockers a 3-0 lead.

In the third, Yoh hit a solo homer with one out to put the Rockers up 4-0.

Leading off the fourth, Long, Jr. unloaded a 451-foot homer that cleared the scoreboard in right field to give the Rockers a 4-0 lead. High Point went on to score four more runs in the inning, getting a two-run single from Michael Martinez and an RBI single from Yoh.

Patrick Ledet (L, 3-5) worked 3.1 innings, allowing five runs and walking six. The Counter Clocks would walk 10 Rockers on the night. Joe Johnson started for the Rockers and threw four shutout innings while walking one and striking out two. Because he did not pitch the five innings required for the win, the victory went to A.J. Cole (W, 2-2) who threw two three-up, three-down innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Game three of the High Point-Lexington series is scheduled for Thursday at 6:35 p.m. at Truist Point.

Staten Island 4, Long Island 3

On Wednesday, the FerryHawks defeated the Long Island Ducks by a score of 4-3. With this win, the FerryHawks snapped a 5-game losing streak and tied this series at one!

The FerryHawks got on the board early in this one and it all started with an Angel Aguilar double. With Aguilar on second and two outs, Kevin Krause mashed a two-run homer over the left field wall to make the game 2-0. The Tottenville High School product, who is flirting with a .300 average, now has 4 home runs and 19 RBI’s on the season.

After a lull in the action, Long Island came roaring back in the 6th inning as they took a 3-2 lead. In the 7^th, Brandon Pugh hit a rocket into left-center that plated two runs and put the FerryHawks back on top 4-3. Pugh has been on a tear since joining the FerryHawks, batting .333 in nearly 50 at-bats.

FerryHawks starter Jesse Remington (1-1) had a strong outing in this contest with a final line of 5 innings, 4 hits, 0 runs, and 2 strikeouts. The newly acquired Enrique Santana was exceptional in relief with a line of 1.2 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, and 1 strikeout. Pedro Payano and Williams Ramirez followed up with scoreless innings of their own to close this one out and secure the 4-3 victory.

Gastonia 9, Lancaster 7

The umpires called the players off the field, sent them back out after a long discussion and removed them for good two batters later.

When it was all done, the Gastonia Honey Hunters left the diamond with a 9-7 win over the Lancaster Barnstormers Wednesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.  The game was halted in the top of the seventh inning due to persistent rain showers.

Pedro Gonzalez boosted Gastonia to a 4-0 lead with a grand slam to left center field off following three walks from Dominic DiSabatino (3-3) in the top of the second as the rain was already causing mud to cake in the cleats.

Wilson Garcia answered with a solo shot off Zack Godley (3-3) in the bottom of the inning, but a triple by Kevin Santa and sacrifice fly by Carlos Franco rebuilt the four-run lead in the third.

Gastonia appeared to put the game away in the fourth inning.  With one out, DiSabatino hit Steven Sensely with a pitch.  Gonzalez doubled over Joseph Carpenter’s outstretched glove in left, plating Sensely.  Cole Freeman picked up the seventh Gastonia run with a single to left center and stole second.  Santa reached on an error, and Zach Jarrett gave the guests an 8-1 lead with a sac fly to center.

Lancaster stormed back.  Ariel Sandoval cranked a leadoff homer to left in the bottom of the fourth.  Trayvon Robinson and Garcia followed with singles.  The runners were balked to second and third.  Godley struck out Joseph Carpenter.  Jack Conley bounced a ball to third, scoring Robinson, and reached on a bobble by Luis Curbelo.  Yeison Coca grounded to first as pinch runner Jake Hoover scored to cut the lead to 8-4.

In the fifth, the Barnstormers loaded the bases with one out.  Garcia rolled a grounder to first, and Curtis Terry fired home for the fourth.  With a double play looming, catcher Scott Manea fired the relay throw into the first section of seats down the right field line as two runs scored.

The teams exchanged runs in the sixth, and, after Robinson grounded out with the tying runs on base, crew chief Buzz Albert summoned the teams off the field.  Lancaster was hesitant to leave as manager Ross Peeples and GM Mike Reynolds pleaded the case that conditions were no worse than they had been all night.

After repairs to the field, Lancaster went out onto defense.  Sensely singled to right to start the seventh.  Gonzalez followed with a grounder to third and appeared to slip near the first base bag.  He came off the field hobbling, the umpires responded by calling the teams off the field a second time, and the obligatory half-hour wait became a mere formality.

David Richardson, who pitched the bottom of the sixth, got his first save.

Lancaster and Gastonia turn right around and meet for a doubleheader Thursday at 11:00 AM.  Nile Ball (2-1) and Bret Clarke (0-4) will take the hill for Lancaster against Ryan Conroy (0-0) and Sam Gaviglio (0-0).  Fans may watch the first game only on Blue Ridge 11.  Both ends of the doubleheader will be streamed live on FloBaseball.

NOTES:  Sandoval has a four-game hitting streak with a hit in his first plate appearance in each…He went 3-for-3 and is batting .393 but is approximately 20 plate appearances shy of qualifying for the league batting lead…Cordero has 19 RBI in 17 games…The Gonzalez grand slam was the first off Lancaster pitching this season…Lancaster is 5-17 in games decided by two runs or fewer.

Charleston 7, York 1

(June 21, 2023 – Charleston, WV):  Carlos Espinal struck out a career-high nine in six shutout innings but the York Revolution offense was frustrated for the second straight night, falling to the Charleston Dirty Birds 7-1 on Wednesday evening at GoMart Ballpark. The Revs have dropped a season-high four consecutive games after winning five straight, but still lead the North Division by one game with 16 remaining in the first half.

Espinal allowed just two hits, both in the second inning, while holding the opposition scoreless for the third time in five starts and his second straight outing. He has worked 11 consecutive scoreless innings, and finished his outing with a 1-0 lead, setting down each of the last eight batters he faced, five of which were retired on strikeouts as the longtime reliever tied a career-high with six innings of work.

Drew Mendoza ripped an RBI double down the left field line in the top of the second to give the Revs their first run of the series, but it was one of only five hits on the night for the York offense.

The Revs threatened to extend the lead in the third and seventh innings with multiple runners aboard, but both innings were soiled by ejections to Revs hitters who expressed frustration with strike calls as Troy Stokes Jr. was tossed in the third and Ryan January got run from the game in the seventh.

Charleston took control of the game with two runs in the seventh and five more in a bat-around eighth inning.

The Dirty Birds scored an insurance run on a passed ball in the seventh and added one more as Jalen Miller flared a two-out RBI single to right center.

Luis Roman singled through the left side to plate the first run in the eighth. Jose Bermudez added an RBI double down the left field line and Miller blooped a two-run double to shallow left center to provide the final margin.

Notes: Charleston has won five of its last six after previously winning back-to-back games just one time in its first 40 games of the year. The Revs have been held to one run in 18 innings in the series, but still rank second in the league in runs scored for the season. All four Revs ejections have occurred over the course of six games played in Charleston. Mendoza has 23 RBI in his last 20 games. Trey Martin walked twice but lost a nine-game hitting streak on which he batted .500 (18-for-36). York righty J.T.
