(Staten Island, N.Y., June 20, 2023) – The Long Island Ducks shut out the Staten Island FerryHawks 10-0 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.

Long Island cracked the scoreboard first in the third inning when Tzu-Wei Lin stole second base and Brantley Bell scored from third on a throwing error. A four-run fourth inning extended the Ducks lead to 5-0. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Chance Sisco and Bell along with a two-run home run off the foul pole in right by Lin, all with two outs, did the damage.

It stayed that way until the ninth when the Ducks put up a five-spot to double their lead to 10. Alex Dickerson’s three-run homer to right-center and Sisco’s two-run single to center highlighted the inning.

Joe Iorio (3-4) earned the win, tossing seven scoreless innings, allowing just a bunt single and a walk while striking out four. Ivan Pineyro (2-2) took the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks over five innings with four strikeouts.

Dickerson led the Ducks offensively with three hits, three RBIs and a run scored. Lin also totaled three hits, driving in two runs and scoring once, while Sisco added two hits, three RBIs, a run and two walks.

The Ducks and FerryHawks continue their three-game set on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at SIUH Community Park. Lancaster 6, Gastonia 0

Brent Teller and two relievers combined on a three-hit shutout Tuesday evening as the Lancaster Barnstormers captured the series opener from the Gastonia Honey Hunters, 6-0, at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

The game was played in front of 7,069, the largest crowd at the Prince Street Stadium since the pandemic.

Teller (3-3) yielded three hits over seven innings.  The right-hander walked one and struck out four.  Jesus Liranzo needed just 11 pitches to strike out three in the eighth inning, and Andrew Lee finished off Gastonia with a strike out and two ground balls.

No Honey Hunter reached second base in the game.

The Barnstormers scored the only run they needed in the first inning off Sal Romano (1-3).  With one out, Andretty Cordero bounced a single up the middle.  He took second on a ground out by Kelly Dugan.  Ariel Sandoval lashed a single into right, and Cordero was able to score when catcher Alexis Olmeda mishandled the throw.

Jack Conley added a homer to left in the second inning, and the score remained, 2-0, until the seventh.

Jake Hoover walked to open the seventh and stole second as Yeison Coca struck out.  Melvin Mercedes also struck out before Cordero hit a topper toward shortstop Kevin Santa.  The off balance throw was wide of first and deflected back toward the infield as Hoover scored.  Kelly Dugan followed with a two-run homer to left for a 5-0 lead.  Ariel Sandoval walked and went to second on Trayvon Robinson’s single to right.  Wilson Garcia drove home the run with a grounder off the glove of second baseman Cole Freeman.

The Barnstormers and Honey Hunters continue the series on Wednesday night.  Dominic DiSabatino (3-2) will take the hill against right-hander Zach Godley (2-3).  Fans may tune in on Blue Ridge 11 or FloBaseball, beginning at 6:30.

High Point 8,  Lexington 3
HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point’s Zander Wiel drove in a pair of runs with a double and a triple and knuckleballer Mickey Jannis became the first Atlantic League pitcher to reach seven wins as the Rockers defeated the Lexington Counter Clocks 8-3 Tuesday night at Truist Point.

The game was called after the top of the sixth inning with the Rockers holding an 8-3 lead. After a 37-minute rain delay, the game was declared final.

Jannis (W, 7-1) struck out seven in his 5.2 innings of work, yielding five hits and three runs before leaving for Bryce Hensley in the top of the sixth. When Hensley retired Josue Huma with a ground out to third, the umpires halted the game before canceling the remainder of the contest 37 minutes later.

The Rockers put up a pair of four-run innings. Trailing 1-0 in the third, the Rockers used an RBI double from Shed Long, Jr.,  a sac fly from Michael Russell, and an RBI triple from Wiel to take a 3-1 lead. Wiel would score on a wild pitch to move ahead 4-1.

In the fourth, Russell and Wiel banged back-to-back run-scoring doubles before Ben Aklinski and Ryan Grotjohn delivered RBI singles for an 8-1 advantage.

The Counter Clocks scored twice in the top of the sixth off Jannis with Hector Roa smacking a two-run triple on the rain-slickened field. One batter later, the game was over.

Yeudy Garcia (L, 2-5) went all five innings for Lexington, allowing the eight runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out two.

High Point and Lexington will play game two of the three-game series on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. at Truist Point. The Rockers will send Joe Johnson to the mound to face Lexington’s Pat Ledet.

Charleston 2, York 0

(June 20, 2023 – Charleston, WV):  Nick Raquet struck out 10 batters but the York Revolution were shut out for the first time this season, dropping the opening game of a six-game road trip to the Charleston Dirty Birds, 2-0 on Tuesday night at GoMart Ballpark.

Raquet (5-4) notched his second 10-strikeout game of the year and allowed only two runs on four hits in 7.1 innings.  Charleston plated the game’s only two runs in the bottom of the first, and Raquet surrendered just one hit the rest of the night.

The Revs offense was kept off balance by crafty lefty Joe Testa as the veteran tossed seven scoreless, scattering seven hits. York out-hit Charleston 8-4 but stranded 10 runners on the night.

Charleston drew first blood with a pair of runs on three base hits in the first inning. Jalen Miller led off with a single and advanced on a ground out before stealing third. Telvin Nash drove in Miller with a double to left center, and after taking third on a ground ball, scored on a base hit to left by Justin O’Conner to spot Charleston the head start in what proved to be the only scoring of the night.

Raquet settled in and was dominant in the tough luck loss, retiring 10 straight at one point, and another six in-a-row to conclude his outing including four consecutive strikeouts to finish the seventh.

Andrew Gross tossed two-thirds of an inning out of the bullpen in the eighth.

York managed a base hit in each of the first six innings but were unable to push anything across.

The Revs loaded the bases in the top of the eighth with a pair of walks and a single off the right field wall by Troy Stokes Jr. against reliever Jacob Bosiokovic, but the hard-throwing righty escaped with a fly out to end the inning.

Joan Martinez retired the side in order in the ninth for his third save as the Revs, one of just two teams in the league who had not been shut out all season, suffered their first goose egg since late in the 2022 season.

Notes: York remains in first place by 1.5 games with 17 to play in the first half. Raquet joins Ian McKinney, formerly of Gastonia, as the only two pitchers in the league with multiple 10-strikeout games this season; he has notched two of only 10 such performances across the league this year and leads the league with 58 strikeouts through 10 starts. He becomes the seventh pitcher in Revs history with multiple 10-strikeout games and joins Chris Cody as the only two lefties to do it.
