Lancaster 8, Staten Island 5

The Atlantic League’s “double hook” rule took center stage Sunday afternoon at SIUH Community Park.

With Staten Island trying to push newcomer Ryan Hartman through five innings to keep Ricardo Cespedes in the lineup, the Lancaster Barnstormers erupted for six runs on eight hits in the inning to defeat the FerryHawks, 8-5, in the rubber game of a three-game series.

Hartman (0-1) had allowed five hits over the first four innings but gave way in the fifth.  Andretty Cordero greeted the lefty with a double and scored on a Kelly Dugan single to center.  One out later, Wilson Garcia doubled into the left field corner, sending Dugan to third.  Joseph Carpenter singled off second baseman Angel Aguilar’s glove to knock in the second run of the inning.  Jack Conley’s third single of the day scored Garcia to pull Lancaster within one.  Jake Hoover lashed a single into center to load the bases, and Yeison Coca followed with a two-run single to right for a 5-4 lead.

Melvin Mercedes capped the salvo with a single to center driving in Hoover.

Carpenter drove in insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings to build upon the lead.

Dominic DiSabatino (3-1) earned the win for Lancaster, surviving the early 4-0 deficit.  He allowed an RBI double by Roldani Baldwin in the first.  Staten Island reached the right-hander for two more in the second, scoring the runs on an RBI single by Cespedes and a sacrifice fly by Jack Elliott.  Elliott also drove in a run with a fourth inning double.

Bret Clarke spelled DiSabatino with the tying run at the plate in the sixth and got out of the jam.  Jesus Liranzo allowed three successive singles in the eighth with Elliott driving home his third run of the game, before striking out the last two hitters.  Mike Adams threw the ninth for his second save.

The Barnstormers head to Southern Maryland for a makeup game on Monday afternoon.  Nile Ball (2-1) will make the start for Lancaster.  Fans may tune into FloBaseball for the action, beginning at 12:55.

NOTES:  Lancaster’s 18 hits was a season high…Mercedes hit safely for the ninth straight game…The Barnstormers have won eight of the last nine…Lancaster has scored 61 runs in the last eight games…The club matched a season high with 12 LOB…Cordero scored for the eighth straight game…Conley caught hits eighth straight…DiSabatino’s win was his 20^th as a Barnstormer.

Frederick 9, Gastonia 6

Frederick’s Sunday win was littered with franchise firsts, including their biggest comeback yet as they used a seven run ninth inning to walk off Gastonia, 9-6. Jose Marmolejos provided the big swing, a three-run home run to cap off the comeback and give Frederick their first win of the year against Gastonia, and send the home question mark jerseys out on the highest of notes. 

After both pitchers had scoreless first innings, Gastonia struck first on a solo home run to lead off the second inning by Carlos Franco. For Franco, it was his fifth home run this season against Frederick, and 12^th overall. 

In the third inning, controversy hit as Jack Reinheimer hit a ball out to left field that was ruled as going over the wall by the third base umpire. Despite arguments and a long discussion, the home run stood, making it 2-0, 

Kole Cottam, fresh off of a two-home run night on Saturday, led off the bottom of the third inning with a long fly ball to centerfield that sent center fielder Cole Freeman crashing into the wall. Cottam was able to race all the way around the bases for the club’s first inside the park home run, and his 10^th of the year. Luckily, Freeman was able to stay in the game. 

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Jimmy Paredes scorched a ball over the right field wall to even up the scoring at two. This came after starter David Kubiak worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the top half. 

With one out in the seventh, Jack Reinheimer chased Kubiak with a two-run double that put Gastonia in front. Jake Fisher relieved Kubiak and got out of the inning without any further damage.  

The ninth inning saw Gastonia get two big insurance runs on a JC Escarra home run, but later in the inning a huge double play and a flyout sent the game to the ninth with a 6-2 score. 

Then the magic happened. With one out, Jimmy Paredes singled and moved to third on a single by Leobaldo Cabrera. Luke Becker then grounded out to short but in turn drove in a run. After a Kole Cottam walk and Scott Kelly hit by pitch, Craig Dedelow drew a bases loaded walk to cut the game to 6-4. On an 0-2 pitch, Starlin Castro lined a single to left which scored Cottam and Kelly to tie the game up, and move Dedelow, the winning run, to third base. 

Jose Marmolejos did more than enough to drive in Dedelow, going deep to right field for the franchise’s first walk off home run, a three-run blast to cap off the seven run rally, and give Frederick the 9-6 win. It was their first win over the Honey Hunters in their 12^th game played. 

Frederick will now embark on a nine-game road trip, traveling to High Point, Lexington and Southern Maryland, before finally returning home for name reveal night on June 23^rd.

High Point 5, Charleston 1

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The High Point Rockers pitching staff turned in one of their best outings of the season in securing a series win with a 5-1 victory at Charleston on Sunday afternoon. Starter Matt Solter allowed just four hits over his six innings and three relievers retired all nine hitters they faced as the staff completed a four-hitter. The win gave the Rockers a 2-1 series win over Charleston.

The Rockers (27-13) picked up a full game in the standings and now trail Gastonia (27-12) by a half-game. The Honey Hunters dropped a 9-6 decision at Frederick on Sunday.

High Point starter Solter (W, 1-1) had his best outing of the season, going six innings and holding Charleston to one run on four hits while walking one and striking out five.  Dirty Bird starter Danny Wirchansky (L, 1-2) allowed six hits and two runs over his seven innings with two walks and five strikeouts.

Cam Bedrosian threw a hitless seventh inning while striking out two and Jameson McGrane followed suit with a pair of Ks in the eighth. Ryan Dull pitched a three-up, three-down ninth inning.

After Solter allowed a Luis Roman single with two outs in the third, the Dirty Birds would not have another baserunner as the Rockers staff retired the last 19 hitters they faced.

Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Yefri Perez walked, stole second, and scored on a single by Jalen Miller.

In the fifth with one out, John Daly singled through the hole at shortstop and raced to third on a broken bat double to left by Cam Williamson. Shed Long, Jr. singled through second base, scoring both runners and giving the Rockers a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the eighth, facing Charleston reliever Jacob Bosiokovic, Michael Martinez drew a walk and Zander Wiel drilled his 11^th homer of the season to deep left field to give High Point a 4-1 lead. Ben Aklinski followed Wiel’s homer with a walk and stole second and third. Bosiokovic walked newly-acquired first baseman Montrell Marshall and hit Brian Parreira to load the bases. A walk to John Daly brought home Aklinski, padding High Point’s lead to 5-1.

Wiel finished with three hits and two RBI while Long, Jr. also drove in a pair of runs. High Point pitchers walked one and struck out 10.  

The Rockers will have Monday off before returning to action on Tuesday, June 13 when they start a three-game series with Frederick. It will be the first of nine straight home games. First pitch on Tuesday is slated for 6:35 p.m.

NOTES: The Rockers traded for Charleston 1B Montrell Marshall prior to Sunday’s game… Marshall had been playing behind Telvin Nash this season… Marshall, a 12^th round pick of the Cincinnati Reds in 2014, was the MVP of the 2018 Midwest League All-Star game and played the 2022 season with the Lexington Legends… Both RHP Kyle Halbohn and OF D.J. Burt were placed on the 7-day injured list over the weekend… INF Tim Bouchard, acquired during the week from the Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer League, was due to arrive in High Point on Sunday and could be activated this week.

York 12, Long Island 5

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 11, 2023) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the York Revolution 12-5 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three-game series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark. 

The Revolution offense was led by a pair of three-run home runs. Trey Martin’s three-run homer to left in the third highlighted a seven-run frame. Troy Stokes Jr. added another three-run shot in the fourth as part of a five-RBI day. 

Brantley Bell and Alex Dickerson both launched solo homers for the Ducks, with Bell’s coming in the third and Dickerson’s coming in the fourth. Bell added an RBI infield single to short in the fifth, Dickerson added an RBI double to left-center in the sixth, and Adeiny Hechavarria chipped in with an RBI double to right in the seventh. 

Sutera (3-2) picked up the win, tossing six and two-thirds innings of five-run ball, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out seven. Harkin (0-1) took the loss, surrendering nine runs on eight hits and a walk in two and one-third innings with three strikeouts. 

Bell led the Ducks offense with two hits, two RBIs, two runs and a walk. Dickerson finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run as well.

The Ducks continue their homestand on Tuesday night when they open a three-game series against the Charleston Dirty Birds. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). It’s a Triple Play Tuesday at the ballpark! If the Ducks turn a triple play during the game, one lucky fan will win $25,000. Simply sign up prior to first pitch at the Ticket Kiosk on the main concourse to be eligible. Right-hander Joe Iorio (2-4, 6.19) gets the start for the Ducks against a Dirty Birds starter to be determined.
