Gastonia 12, Frederick 7

FREDERICK, MD – Frederick’s woes against Gastonia continued on Saturday night as they dropped the middle game of their three game set by a 12-7 score, dropping to 0-11 against the first place Honey Hunters.

Gastonia wasted no time getting to Dustin Beggs on Saturday, as Jack Reinheimer led the game off with a double, and was followed immediately by a JC Escarra home run. Later in the inning, a Steven Sensley double and Scott Manea groundout plated two more, giving Gastonia the early 4-0 cushion.

Frederick got a pair back in the bottom of the first as Raudy Read hit a lined shot over the left field wall that cut the deficit in half, 4-2. It was the ninth homer of the year for Read, who extended his hitting streak to 15 games. 

 Gastonia proceeded to score in the next three innings to pad their lead. In the second inning, it was a Zach Jarrett single. Curtis Terry led off the third inning with a solo home run, and later in the inning, Cole Freeman knocked an RBI single of his own. After a leadoff walk in the fourth inning, Zach Jarrett continued to torch Frederick with a two-run blast, making it 9-2. One batter later, Beggs was chased from the game in favor of a debuting Jeff Singer. 

 Singer proceeded to impress in his Frederick debut with a pair of scoreless innings that included a pair of strikeouts.

 In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kole Cottam led the frame off with a solo home run to right center field. 

 Max Tannenbaum was next out of the bullpen for Frederick, and tossed a perfect sixth inning.

 In the bottom of the sixth, Frederick led off with yet another home run, this time off the bat of Jose Marmolejos, cutting the deficit to 9-4.

 The seventh for Frederick did not go as smoothly, as Scott Manea led off with a home run off of Brady Feigl. Jack Reinheimer added a two-run home run of his own to make it a 12-4 game. Reinheimer finished his night with four hits, reaching base five times, and coming a triple shy of the cycle. 

 Frederick would not go down without a fight, however, as Leobaldo Cabrera reached on a one-out double, and scored on a pinch-hit single by Scott Kelly. Cottam followed with another home run to cut the deficit to 12-7, but Sam Freeman retired the next two to close the game out and secure another series win for Gastonia.

 Frederick will look to right the ship on Sunday, as they send David Kubiak to the mound for a 1 PM first pitch

Charleston 9, High Point 8 (12 innings)
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Charleston’s Telvin Nash singled in the bottom of the 12^th inning to score Dwight Smith, Jr. and defeat the High Point Rockers 9-8 in 12 innings on Saturday night at GoMart Ballpark. The Rockers used six pitchers in the game and turned to outfielder Ben Aklinski in the 12^th as he allowed the base hit to Nash.

The Rockers had fought throughout the game to overcome an early 6-2 deficit.

Trailing 6-2 after five innings, the Rockers gained a run back in the top of the sixth when Aklinski doubled and scored on a single by Ryan Grotjohn to make it 6-3. In the eighth, Zander Wiel slammed a solo homer, his 10^th of the year, leading off the frame to pull the Rockers to within 6-4. Aklinski and Grotjohn followed Wiel’s homer with back-to-back singles off reliever Victor Lopez. John Daly then reached on a fielding error by third baseman Diego Goris  as Aklinski scored to make it 6-5. Shed Long, Jr. then doubled to right-center to give the Rockers a 7-6 lead.

Charleston tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth.  With one out, Charleston put together three straight singles off reliever Jeremy Rhoades to tie the game.

Neither team scored in the 10^th. In the 11^th, Rhoades started the inning at second and moved to third on a fly ball to left by by Long, Jr. Michael Martinez then hit a sac fly to right that brought home Rhoades and put the Rockers in front 8-7. In the bottom of the inning, the Dirty Birds were able to tie the game at 8-8.

In the 12^th, the Rockers were held unable to advance the runner off second. In the bottom half with Aklinski on the mound, Nash hit a 2-0 pitch deep into the outfield to score Smith, Jr. and give Charleston the 9-8 win.

The Rockers opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second. Grotjohn was hit by a pitch with two outs. Brian Parreira lined a single to right with Grotjohn moving to third. From there, he scored on a passed ball by Charleston catcher Justin O’Conner to put High Point in the lead at 1-0.

Bobby Bradley blasted a lead-off homer in the second to tie the game at 1-1. High Point took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third as Michael Martinez singled and moved to third on a double by Beau Taylor. Zander Wiel grounded out to short bringing Martinez home.

The Dirty Birds blew up for five runs against High Point starter Liam O’Sullivan in the third. Luis Roman and Clayton Mehlbauer picked up RBI singles and Telvin Nash blasted a two-run homer to give Charleston a 6-2 lead.

A.J. Cole came on the pitch for High Point in the bottom of the eighth and struck out two of the three batters he faced in putting the Dirty Birds down in order.

The final game of the series is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. on Sunday at GoMart Ballpark. The Rockers will have an off-day on Monday then open a nine-game homestand on Tuesday, June 13 with Frederick. All games are available on a live stream on FloBaseball.com.

Lancaster 11, Staten Island 0

Jared Lakind tossed a three-hit shutout for seven innings late Saturday afternoon as the Lancaster Barnstormers romped to an 11-0 win over the Staten Island FerryHawks at SIUH Community Park.

Lakind (3-2) walked four and struck out five in the effort.  Only one hit left the infield, a double down the third base line by Angel Aguilar in the fourth.  Staten Island only had multiple runners on base at the same time in the seventh inning.  Lakind walked Aguilar to open the inning, then surrendered a two-out walk to catcher Matthew Garcia.  A passed ball sent the runners to second and third.  Brandon Pugh hit Garcia with a grounder on the left side for the third hit off Lakind, ending the inning.

Cole Aker and Brian Marconi each threw a perfect inning to complete the shutout.

Lancaster took advantage of 11 hits and messy play by the FerryHawks to reach double figures for the first time since May 20. 

Wilson Garcia reached on a throwing error to start the second.  Designated pinch runner Tyler LaPorte took over and was pushed to third on a pair of walks.  Yeison Coca got the run home with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Andretty Cordero doubled into the left field corner to lead off the third, the first hit off Michael Byrne (0-2).  He took third on a wild pitch before Kelly Dugan was hit by a pitch.  Trayvon Robinson found the gap in left center for an RBI double.  Dugan scored on an infield out by Garcia, and Robinson would make it 4-0, scoring on a wild throw on Jack Conley’s stolen base.

The third error of the afternoon for the FerryHawks allowed Cordero to score in the fourth, and the Barnstormers blew the game wide open in the fifth.

Joseph Carpenter opened that inning with a double and scored on a one-out triple by Jake Hoover.  Hoover, in turn came home on Coca’s single to right center.  Vincenzo Aiello replaced Byrne and walked Melvin Mercedes.  Cordero singled home Coca with the eighth run.  Mercedes scored on another throwing error.  Dugan doubled to left for the 10^th run, and the 11^th scored on a grounder by Robinson.

Altogether, the Barnstormers benefitted from four errors and seven walks.  Three of the runs off Byrne were unearned.

The two clubs will meet again on Sunday at 1:00.  Dominic DiSabatino (2-1) will matchup against Ryan Hartman (0-0), the third straight lefty starter for the FerryHawks.  Fans may tune in on FloBaseball at 12:55.

Long Island 12, Lancaster 10

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 10, 2023) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the York Revolution 12-10 on Saturday night in the middle game of a three-game series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.

York took a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Ducks starter McKenzie Mills on RBI singles by Jacob Rhinesmith and Trey Martin. The Ducks cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the frame on Alejandro De Aza’s RBI groundout to short. A three-run second inning against Revolution starter Jorge Martinez, highlighted by Brian Goodwin’s RBI single to center and Tzu-Wei Lin’s two-run homer to left-center, put the Ducks on top 4-2.

The Revs went back on top 5-4 with a run in the third and two in the fourth on RBI doubles from Martin and Trent Giambrone along with an RBI single from Tomo Otosaka. However, Long Island leapfrogged back ahead 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth on De Aza’s two-out, two-run single to right. York re-took the lead in the fifth on a two-out, two-run double by Jhon Nunez, but the Ducks responded in the sixth with a solo homer to right by Chance Sisco and an RBI single off the first base bag by De Aza to go in front 8-7.

A three-run seventh inning put the Revolution back ahead 10-8. Martin’s solo homer to center, a run-scoring passed ball and a sac fly off the bat of Nunez did the damage. However, the Ducks stormed back with four two-out runs in the eighth to take a 12-10 lead. Alex Dickerson’s RBI single, a bases loaded walk by Goodwin and a two-run single from Sisco highlighted the inning.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Mills lasted five innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Martinez pitched five and one-third innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits and two walks. Kyle Lobstein (1-1) picked up the win with a scoreless eighth inning, striking out two. Tasker Strobel (1-1) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs on three hits and three walks in the eighth inning with two strikeouts. Al Alburquerque notched his third save with a scoreless ninth, striking out one.

De Aza led the Flock with three hits, four RBIs, a run and a walk. Sisco added two hits, three RBIs, a run and a walk, while Lin chipped in with two hits, two RBIs, three runs and a walk.

The Ducks and Revolution wrap up their three-game set on Sunday afternoon. Game time is slated for 1:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 12:35 (12:20 for full season ticket holders). The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive Ducks Sport Water Bottles, courtesy of Atria Senior Living. It’s also a Sunday Family Funday, presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union! Prior to the game, fans will be invited down for a Catch on the Field from 12:40 to 1:00. After the game, fans of all ages are also invited to take part in Kids Run the Bases. Right-hander Scott Harkin (season debut) toes the rubber for the Ducks against York righty Tom Sutera (2-2, 5.14).
