Staten Island 10, York 7

(June 7th, 2023 – York, Pa.): The York Revolution saw their franchise record nine-game winning streak come to an end as the Staten Island FerryHawks held off York’s late-game push in a 10-7 decision on Wednesday night at WellSpan Park. While the Revs’ winning streak is snapped, their half-game lead for first place in the North Division remains intact as they’ll go for a fifth consecutive series victory on Thursday evening.

York jumped on top early with a pair of solo home runs as Nellie Rodriguez drove one out to right field leading off the bottom of the second, and Ryan January crushed a 441-foot shot down the right field line later in the inning for an early 2-0 lead.

The FerryHawks went ahead, powered by home runs from eighth-place hitter Luis Castro in consecutive innings, a solo shot in the third, and a two-run long ball to highlight a three-run fourth as Staten Island took a 4-2 lead.

York got one back in the fourth as with two outs and the bases clear, January walked, Trent GIambrone singled, and Tomo Otosaka walked to load the bases for Jacob Rhinesmith who also walked to force in a run, making it a 4-3 game.

Staten Island went off for five runs in the sixth, taking control of the game. Revs starter Nick Raquet had two outs and a runner on when Staten Island strung together three straight hits including back-to-back RBI singles by Ricardo Cespedes and Angel Aguilar. With cleanup hitter Kevin Krause coming up with two aboard, the Revs went to reliever J.T. Hintzen. Krause proceeded to launch a three-run homer clearing the Arch Nemesis in left, swelling the Staten Island lead to 9-3.

Staten Island added one more on a Castro sac fly to right field in the seventh making it 10-3.

York was held silent in the sixth and seventh by the Staten Island bullpen before sparking a comeback bid with two outs in the eighth.

Giambrone ignited a late-game push by going yard over the Nemesis for his seventh home run of the year, making it 10-4. Otosaka hit an infield single, stole second and third, and after Rhinesmith walked, scored as Rivero singled into right field to cut it to 10-5. Drew Mendoza ripped an RBI single into right field to notch his 11th straight game with a hit while chasing reliever Jim Fuller from the game.

Pedro Payano was brought in to face Rodriguez with runners at the corners and the Staten Island lead cut to 10-6. Rodriguez hit one to shortstop as Aguilar dove to stop it, but his flip to Castro pulled the second baseman off the bag allowing the fourth run of the inning to score as the Revs trailed just 10-7. Trey Martin got good wood on his swing but flied out to deep right field as the inning ended with the bases loaded.

JP Woodward struck out two in a scoreless inning out of the Revs bullpen in the top of the ninth.

The Revs got the first two aboard in the bottom of the ninth on a January single and a walk by Giambrone, but Payano retired the next three to escape with his fourth save.

Raquet (4-3) suffered the loss, charged with eight runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings.

Staten Island starter Blake Loubier (1-2) managed to pick up the win, allowing three runs despite walking eight in five innings.

The Revs totaled 11 hits and drew 12 walks but stranded 15 runners.

Notes: Rhinesmith drew four walks, matching a Revs’ single-game record for the 12th time; Rodriguez was the last to do it on May 13, 2022 at Lancaster. Rodriguez’ home run was the 57th of his Revs career, moving past Carlos Franco into fifth in Revs history; next on the list is Chris Nowak who sits at fourth all-time with 59. Mendoza’s 11-game hitting streak is tied for the longest active streak in the league; he now has 14 RBI on the streak. Giambrone’s home run was his team-leading seventh of the season; the Revs have hit five homers over the Arch Nemesis at WellSpan Park with Giambrone having hit three of those five. York righty Carlos Espinal (2-0, 2.70) faces Hawks lefty Jesse Remington (0-0, 10.80) in Thursday’s rubber match at 6:30 p.m.  It is a Hunger Free Thursday presented by Members 1st Federal Credit Union. High Point 12, So. Maryland 1

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point Rockers, after being held to just a single run in each of the last two games, broke out the bats on Wednesday and pounded 15 hits and four home runs in setting down So. Maryland 12-1 at Truist Point.

The Rockers improved to 25-11 and remain a half-game behind Gastonia (25-10) in the Atlantic League’s South Division. The Honey Hunters dropped a 13-1 decision at Charleston on Wednesday night.

Catcher Beau Taylor blasted High Point’s first grand slam of the year during a five-run fourth inning. His round-tripper was accompanied by a two-run shot by Zander Wiel in the first, another two-run homer from John Nogowski in the third and a solo homer by Michael Martinez leading off the fifth.

Third baseman Michael Russell had four hits and three runs scored, crossing the plate on both the Wiel and Nogowski homers. Wiel finished with three hits and four RBI.

Five High Point pitchers held So. Maryland to seven hits on the night. Starter Ryan Weiss (W, 1-0) made his Rockers debut and went five innings while allowing four hits and one run with one walk and two strikeouts. Cam Bedrosian, Jameson McGrane, Austin Ross, and Kyle Halbohn each threw shutout innings for High Point.

The Rockers tagged Blue Crabs starter Jared Burch (L, 3-3) with eight hits and four runs in his three innings of work. On offense, So. Maryland received a pair of hits each from Ryan Haug and Michael Baca.

High Point scored a pair of runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead. Russell beat out a grounder to third for an infield hit. After stealing second he trotted home on Wiel’s ninth homer of the year, a 412-foot blast to left field.

Nogowski joined the long ball brigade in the third, following Russell’s double with a two-run shot of his own that put the Rockers in front 4-0.

Cam Williamson led off the High Point fifth with a single and Shed Long, Jr. drew a walk from reliever Connor Gleeson before Russell singled off the wall in left. Wiel reached on a fielder’s choice as Williamson scored. A walk to Ben Aklinski re-loaded the bases before Taylor hit his grand slam to right to put the Rockers up 9-1. In the fifth, the Rockers added a run on a sac fly by Nogowski and an RBI single from Wiel.

The Blue Crabs tallied their only run in the third off Weiss when Haug singled and moved to third on a double by Jack Sundberg. Philip Caulfield’s ground out to third brought Haug in to score.

High Point and So. Maryland will conclude their three-game series on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. at Truist Point. The Rockers will send Kyle Barraclough (0-0, 1.13 ERA) to the mound to face the Blue Crabs’ LHP Mitch Lambson (6-0, 2.30 ERA). It will be Thirsty Thursday at Truist Point with $2 specials on select drinks. The game will be streamed live on FloSports and MixLR will carry the Rockers’ audio broadcast of the game.

Charleston 13, Gastonia 1

Gastonia pitching allowed 13 runs on 15 hits, with five Charleston players recording multi-hit games, as the Honey Hunters were routed by the Dirty Birds 13-1 on Wednesday night.

Gunnar Kines made his second start of the season, and it was a rough one.

The southpaw threw five innings, and let up runs in each of the first four.

Kines surrendered seven runs on nine hits in the five innings, walking and striking out two. The scoring against the lefty was capped off by a Dwight Smith Jr solo homer in the fourth.

Smith had a phenomenal evening at the plate on Wednesday, after not playing the night prior.

He worked a walk in his first plate appearance, and became the first of several runners to reach base against Kines.

Smith then scored on Bobby Bradley’s RBI double to put Charleston up 1-0 in the first inning.

In Smith’s second at-bat against Kines, he hit a single that plated Justin O’Connor to give his team a 3-0 lead.

The third at-bat was the solo shot, which was a curveball that Smith pulled 389 feet to straight-away right field.

Smith’s fourth long ball of the season gave the Dirty Birds a 7-1 lead, and he also walked and scored one of three runs in the sixth.

Gastonia got its lone run courtesy of Curtis Terry, who followed up his double in his first at-bat with a solo dinger in his second.

Terry hit a high fly ball to deep left, Bradley jumped but it was out of his reach and just beyond the wall.

Through four innings, Terry was the only Huney Hunter with at least one hit – having a double and homer.

Terry’s sixth home run ended up being the only offense for Gastonia.

Smith responded with the home run to lead off the next inning, and the Dirty Birds never looked back from there.

Bradley hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning, giving him a season total of 13 bombs and 32 RBIs.

Jalen Miller and Zachary Bridges hit back-to-back long balls off Kelvin Gonzalez in the eighth, their first and second homers of the year, respectively.

Smith, Bradley, Telvin Nash, Diego Goris and Jose Bermudez all had multi-hit nights for Charleston, combining for 10 of the team’s 15 on Wednesday.

Gastonia finally got its 10th loss of the year, snapping its six-game winning streak.

As for Charleston, it received its 10th win of 2023 in dominant fashion.

The rubber match is on Thursday at 6:35 p.m.

Long Island-Frederick postponed

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 7, 2023) – Wednesday’s (June 7) game between the Long Island Ducks and Frederick Baseball Team has been postponed because of poor air quality due to smoke from the Canadian wildfires.

Wednesday’s (6/7) game will be made up on Thursday, June 8, as part of a single admission doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). Game two will begin approximately 30 minutes after the completion of game one, and both games will be slated for seven innings.

Tickets for Wednesday’s (6/7) game may be exchanged for tickets of equal or lesser value to any remaining 2023 Ducks regular season home game, subject to availability. Fans may exchange their tickets at the Fairfield Properties Ballpark box office or by calling (631) 940-TIXX.
