(Bridgewater, N.J., Aug 14, 2016) - Former Somerset Patriots infielder Robert Andino has been called up to the Major Leagues with the Miami Marlins and will start at second base in Sunday’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
Andino hit .267 with 112 hits, 24 doubles, 13 home runs and 46 RBI in 108 games for Triple-A New Orleans this season before being promoted.
He had 115 hits, 30 doubles, four home runs and 56 RBI in 123 games for Somerset during the championship season. A ground ball hit to him at short started the double play that ended Game 4 of the Championship Series to clinch the title.
Andino becomes the 16th Somerset Patriots player to be called up to the Major Leagues after spending time in Somerset. Earlier this season, former relief pitcher Buddy Boshers made the Minnesota Twins Major League roster. Boshers was also a member of the 2015 Atlantic League Championship Somerset Patriots.
“It’s always exciting for us when one of our own makes it to the Major Leagues, whether it is a return trip or for the first time. Robert was a key member of our championship team, put in the work he needed to get his shot at the Big Leagues, and reached his goal. It just goes to show what a great job the Atlantic League is doing to help these talented players get to Major League organizations. We wish him the very best with the Marlins,” said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie.
Andino has nine years of prior Major League service, having spent parts of four seasons with both the Marlins and Baltimore Orioles, and most recently in 2013 with the Seattle Mariners.
The Miami, Florida native’s two most notable seasons in the Majors came in 2011 and 2012 with the Orioles, where he appeared in 139 and 127 games, respectively. Over his nine years in the big leagues, Andino has appeared in 468 games with 18 home runs, 96 RBI and 24 stolen bases.
In 2014, the former second-round pick of the Marlins played in 109 games in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization with Triple-A Indianapolis. There, he hit seven homers with 42 RBI and 15 doubles.
Andino has 78 home runs, 450 RBI, 117 stolen bases and 1,128 hits in his 12 seasons of minor league baseball.
