Sutera, Martin returning to Revs in 2024

(February 6, 2024 – York, Pa.) – Outfielder Trey Martin and right-handed pitcher Tom Sutera are set to return to the York Revolution roster in 2024, marking the first two player signings for the upcoming season. The agreements were announced by Revs manager Rick Forney live on Monday night’s airing of Revs Hot Stove Weekly presented by Shipley Energy on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK.

Martin comes off a sensational first season in York, during which he batted .282 with a career-high 19 home runs, 23 doubles, 82 RBI, 90 runs scored, and a league-leading 46 stolen bases in 48 attempts, the third-highest single-season total in Revs history. He finished one long ball shy of becoming just the second member of the league’s 20-40 club and his runs total tied the sixth-highest in the league and the sixth-highest in a season in franchise history. Defensively, the majority of his time came in right field (80 starts) while he also made 29 starts in center field.

A consistent performer, Martin enjoyed a 22-game on-base streak from May 30-June 27, and his .393 batting average in June ranked third across the league. He posted a 27-game on-base streak from June 28-August 2 and in early July, enjoyed streaks of 10 consecutive games with a hit, eight straight with an RBI, and 10 in-a-row with a run scored. Of his long balls, six came on a 12-game surge from June 29-July 11 including his first career two-homer game (June 29 vs Staten Island) and the third inside-the-park home run in Revs’ history (July 5 vs Charleston).

“We’re excited to have him back,” commented Forney. “He had an awesome year last year. He was one of the better outfield defenders in the league, I thought. Lots of defensive versatility. He exceeded my expectations offensively, hit for more power than I expected… he had a remarkable season.”

Originally a 13th round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs in 2011 out of Brookwood (GA) High School, the 31-year-old enters his 14th pro season as a career .258 hitter with 154 doubles, 58 homers, 398 RBI, and 188 stolen bases. Martin ascended through the Cubs organization to reach Triple-A Iowa in 2018 and was a MiLB Gold Glove award winner in 2015 with Myrtle Beach.

Sutera returns after going 9-7 in 26 outings (22 starts) for the Revs in 2023. Rebounding from an injury that sidelined him the year before, Sutera opened the year in the Revs bullpen before moving into the starting rotation following a brilliant 5.1-inning relief effort in early May. The 6’5 righty ended up working the fifth-most innings in the league (125.1) while striking out 100 batters and walking just 35 for the season. His overall 6.10 ERA came in a 2023 season that was marked by inflated run totals across the league, while he finished strong with a 3.53 mark in seven outings from August 15 through season’s end.

Among his season highlights, Sutera went three straight starts without a walk, June 24-July 4, was 4-0 during the month of July, rolled three double plays in a combined shutout on August 26 vs Charleston, and struck out a career-high 10 batters in his final start of the season, September 12 vs High Point. The Waterford, CT, native also routinely breezed through the early innings of games, working 12 consecutive scoreless first innings from June 29-September 1, while holding a 2.25 ERA during the first three innings of games over that 12-start stretch.

“I’m thrilled that Tom’s returning,” said Forney. “He had a good season and really enjoyed his time here. I didn’t have to do a whole lot of convincing to talk him into coming back to York. He’s another guy that exceeded my expectations. I just thought he was a good arm that would provide some bullpen depth for us and take some baby steps recovering from his surgery, but he showed early on that he could potentially be a starter, and once he jumped into the rotation, he was really good for us and gave us consistency every five days he took the ball.”

The 2024 season will be Sutera’s fifth as a pro. The 26-year-old spent his first three seasons in the Philadelphia Phillies organization after signing out of Siena College in 2018.

The Revs will announce additional player signings throughout the preseason live on Revs Hot Stove Weekly presented by Shipley Energy on WOYK. The next episode is scheduled to air on Monday, February 12, at 6 p.m.
