In the South, Gastonia lopped three games off High Point’s four-game lead with a weekend sweep but the series shifts to Gastonia this coming weekend for more drama.
Contracts Sold: LAN OF B.J. Boyd had his contract purchased by the Los Angeles Angels (6/3)... CWV’s LHP Kit Scheetz has been acquired by Oacaca of the Mexican League.
Standouts of the First Half Week: GAS’s Joseph Rosa was 9-for-14 (.643) in a home series vs. LI… YRK’s Carlos Franco had seven hits, three homers and seven RBI vs. SMD… LI’s Alejandro De Aza had six hits, two HR and eight RBIs vs. GAS… SMD’s Mitch Lambson and LEX’s Keyvius Sampson each had 13 strikeout nights, Lambson vs. York (6/2) and Sampson vs. KY (5/31).
Standouts of the Second Half Week: LAN’s Kelly Dugan homered four times vs. SMD with at least one in each of the three games… He has five homers in his last 12 ABs vs. SMD… LI’s Sam Travis was 7-for-12 with six RBI vs. Staten Island… CWV’s Nick Longhi had seven hits, two HR and five RBI at LEX… LI’s De Aza had seven hits and a pair of doubles vs. SI… CWV’s Kit Scheetz fanned 10 in seven innings at LEX (6/3).
Long At-Bats: LAN’s Kelly Dugan flew out on his 12th pitch from SMD’s Endrys Briceno on 6/5… Boog Powell of Lexington singled on his 12th pitch from CWV’s Derrick Adams on 6/5.
Individual Hitting: HP’s Michael Russell set a club record by scoring five runs in a game against Charleston on 5/31… Kentucky’s Jimmy Paredes knocked three doubles against Lexington on 5/31, tying the league-high for the year… SMD’s Braxton Lee hit a pair of triples at York on 5/31… York’s Carlos Franco had a pair of homers and six RBI in a 10-9 loss to SMD on 5/31… LI’s Alejandro De Aza is riding a nine-game hitting streak in which he is hitting .486 with three homers and 14 RBI… Melky Mesa hit his 63rd career homer as a member of the Revolution on 6/3… LEX’s Blake Swihart hit a grand slam vs. Kentucky on 6/1.
Individual Pitching: SMD’s Daryl Thompson won two games this week as did Keyvius Sampson of LEX… For Thompson, he extended his ALPB record to 81 career victories… Sampson fanned 21 hitters in his 13 innings… On his 31st birthday (6/2) YRK’s Duke von Schamann retired the first 10 hitters he faced against KY… CWV’s Kit Scheetz has made four straight starts where he has allowed fewer than one baserunner per inning.
Outside The Lines: Long Island drew a beyond-capacity crowd of 6,362 for its 6/4 game with SI at Fairfield Properties Ballpark… Mark Weidemaier has joined the Ducks as pitching coach, replacing Rick Tomlin.
Streaks: Gastonia’s Joseph Rosa is riding a six-game hitting streak in which he is 14-for-24 (.583)… LI’s Vladimir Frias has a 16-game hitting streak, longest active in the league… YRK’s Carlos Franco has reached base in 23 straight games… CWV’s Tyler Wilson has a streak of 16 straight innings without an earned run and eight straight without a hit… KY’s Tim Peterson is at 15 straight innings without an earned run.
League Leaders: LAN’s Kelly Dugan has wrestled the league HR lead away from LEX’s Courtney Hawkins . . . Dugan is now at 15 and Hawkins at 14 with YRK’s Carlos Franco in third with 13… The same three also control the RBI race with Dugan (44) leading Franco (43) and Hawkins (40)… Dugan owns the top marks with 27 extra base hits and 105 total bases… SI’s Julio Teheran owns the league’s best ERA at 1.60 but he has not pitched since 5/20… SMD’s Mitch Lambson is the lone ALPB pitcher with two complete games… He and LAN’s Cameron Gann lead the loop with 49 strikeouts… Mat Latos of SMD has raised his league-leading save total to 13, nearly double that of his nearest rival.
Sweeps Month: Gastonia’s last three series have all been sweeps… GAS swept four at Long Island 5/27-30; were swept at home by the Ducks 5/31-6/2 then swept three at High Point 6/3-6/5… Which means Gastonia enters the week with a four-game home losing streak and a seven-game road winning streak.
Team Hitting: HP set a club record for runs scored in a game in an 18-3 win over CWV on 5/31…York tallied a nine-run third inning in a 14-11 win over KY on 6/4… KY has 10 or more hits in eight of its last 10 contests… CWV has at least one double in 13 straight games… Gastonia swiped eight bases in 12 attempts over the weekend vs. High Point… Facing Gastonia, the Rockers were held to fewer than five runs in three straight games for the first time this year… Kentucky has at least one double in 15 straight games… Lancaster has clubbed multiple doubles in each of its last five games… The Ducks had a season-high five doubles vs. Long Island (6/5)…
Team Pitching: Seven Charleston pitchers combined to one-hit Lexington on 6/4… High Point’s pitching staff allowed double-figure base hits in just three of its first 36 games until doing so in each of the last four.
