Lancaster 4, Gastonia 1

Cameron Gann spread four hits over six shutout innings early Thursday to pitch the Lancaster Barnstormers to a 4-1 victory over the Gastonia Honey Hunters in the finale of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium

It was the final meeting between the two clubs this season.

Gann (3-2) did not allow more than one baserunner in any of his six innings.  In both the first and sixth innings, the Honey Hunters got a runner to second base with nobody out.  Rayder Ascanio picked up a leadoff walk from Gann in the first and promptly stole second.  Gann retired three straight on ground balls to escape the threat.  Ascanio led off the sixth with a double off the base of the right field wall.  Again, Gann retired three straight around a two-out wild pitch to keep Gastonia off the board.

Jake Skole had a two-out double in the second, and Zach Jarrett added a two-out triple in the fourth inning, but Gastonia could make nothing of either threat.

Gann finished his six innings on 93 pitches.  He walked one and struck out four.

Lancaster accomplished just enough off Gastonia right-hander Reilly Hovis (1-1).  LeDarious Clark walked to start the second.  The Lancaster left fielder stole second and third and, with two outs, scored on a double to the gap in right center by Anderson Feliz.

The Barnstormers tacked on a second run in the fifth.  Hovis walked Feliz and Anthony Peroni in succession with one out.  He struck out Jake Hoover, but BJ Boyd reached the Gastonia starter for a ground rule double into the left field corner and a 2-0 lead.

Gastonia caught up a run against Chase Johnson in the seventh.  Emmanuel Tapia lined a one-out single to center and advanced on a two-out walk to Reece Hampton.  Stuart Levy delivered the run with a looping single to center, his lone hit of the season series.

Lancaster opened up some breathing room in the eighth, reaching lefty reliever Quinton Torres-Costa for four singles, a pair of walks and two runs.  Clark picked up the first RBI with a single to left, scoring Boyd, who had singled to start the inning.  Andretty Cordero knocked in Clark with a hit-and-run single into right.

Johnson and Josh Graham retired the final seven Gastonia batters, four on strikes to nail the game down.

The Barnstormers open a four-game Memorial Day Weekend series against the York Revolution on Friday night.  Brent Teller (2-3) will take the hill for Lancaster against York ace Jorge Martinez (2-2).  Fans may tune into the game on the Barnstormers YouTube channel, beginning at 6:25.

NOTES:  Boyd is 13-for-31 in a seven-game hitting streak…Feliz jumped into second in the league with his 12^th double…He has 14 RBI in his last 13 games…Clark has batted safely in 17 of 18…His three stolen bases on the day is more than the team had swiped in any previous game…He has seven steals in his last 10 games…Lancaster starters allowed only two runs in 17 innings in the series…Lancaster finished the year 3-4 against Gastonia…The team is 9-3 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Long Island 8, Southern Maryland 3

Central Islip, N.Y., May 26, 2022) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 8-3 on Thursday night in the rubber game of a three-game series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.

Long Island struck first in the opening inning when Dustin Woodcock doubled and later scored on a wild pitch by Blue Crabs starter Daryl Thompson. Two more runs in the third on a bases loaded walk by Deven Marrero and an RBI fielder’s choice off Woodcock’s bat made it a 3-0 ballgame. The Ducks then put up a three-spot in third, doubling their lead to six. Vladimir Frias’ RBI single to right and Marrero’s two-run single to center did the damage. 

Southern Maryland got on the scoreboard in the fifth courtesy of Austin Rei’s two-run single to center off Ducks starter Scott Harkin, closing the gap to 6-2. Alex Crosby’s sac fly to right in the sixth made it a 6-3 game, but the Flock got the run back in the sixth on De Aza’s RBI single to right. Marrero added a solo homer to left leading off the eighth to round out the scoring for the night.

Harkin (2-3) earned the win, tossing five innings of two-run (one earned) ball, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out two. Thompson (3-2) took the loss, surrendering six runs on nine hits and four walks over five innings with five strikeouts.

Marrero led the Flock offensively with three hits, a walk, and four RBIs. De Aza, Frias and Joe DeCarlo each added two hits, with De Aza and DeCarlo also drawing a walk.

The Ducks continue their homestand on Friday night when they open a four-game series against the Gastonia Honey Hunters. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). The first 2,000 fans exiting the ballpark following Friday’s game will receive a Chocolate Bar Giveaway, courtesy of Evolved Chocolate. It’s also an Angela’s Pizza Friday! A player on the Honey Hunters will be designated as the K-Man, and if he strikes out during the game, all fans can show their game ticket to receive half-priced appetizers on all to-go orders throughout the rest of the weekend at Angela’s Pizzeria of Islip. Right-hander Anderson DeLeon (2-1, 3.72) gets the start for the Ducks against Honey Hunters lefty Michael Gunn (2-0, 1.59).

York 17, Staten Island 1
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – York exploded for 10 runs in the third inning and cruised home to a 17-1 win over Staten Island at Staten Island University Hospital/Northwell Health “Community Park,”

The Revolution utilized RBI singles from Troy Stokes, Jr., Carlos Franco, and Connor Lien, a pair of run-producing fielding error, a wild pitch and three bases loaded walks to score the 10 runs in the third.

York’s J.C. Encarnacion had four hits while Melky Mesa had a pair of his and led all hittes with four RBI. Lien added three hits, a homer and two RBI.

York’s Merandy Gonzalez (1-2) earned the win with seven innings of four-hit pitching while striking out six. Staten Island’s Nick Carrell (0-1) took the loss but five FerryHawks pitchers combined to allow 13 hits and 11 walks.

High Point at Charleston, Postponed

The High Point Rockers game at Charleston on Thursday night has been postponed due to rain.

The Rockers will make-up the game on June 19 in Charleston as part of a doubleheader.

The Rockers will open a four-game series at the Staten Island FerryHawks starting on Friday, May 27 at 7:00 p.m.
