Long Island 6, Staten Island 3

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 19, 2022) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Staten Island FerryHawks 6-3 on Thursday night in the final game of a three-game series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.

The Ducks took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Johnni Turbo scored from third on a fielding error by Brandon Wagner. A sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of Sam Travis in the third extended the Ducks lead to two. A four-run fourth against FerryHawks starter Alex Vargas gave the Ducks a 6-0 advantage. RBI singles by Turbo and Travis, a sac fly off the bat of L.J. Mazzilli and an RBI double by Dustin Woodcock did the damage.

Staten Island got on the scoreboard in the sixth on Alfredo Reyes’ run-scoring groundout off Ducks starter Brett Kennedy. Rymer Liriano hit a two-run homer to left in the ninth, closing the gap to 6-3, but the FerryHawks were unable to pull even.

Kennedy (2-1) earned the win, tossing seven innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out seven. Vargas (0-3) suffered the loss, surrendering six runs on seven hits and four walks in three and two-thirds innings. Sandy Baez picked up his third save of the season after recording the final out of the game.

 Turbo and Woodcock led the Flock offensively with two hits and an RBI each. Mazzilli and Travis each drove in two runs.

 The Ducks hit the road on Friday night to open a three-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium. Fans can follow all the action on the Long Island Ducks Broadcast Network. Right-hander Akeel Morris (0-1, 5.49) gets the start for the Ducks against Blue Crabs righty Daryl Thompson (2-1, 3.23).

Long Island returns home on Tuesday, May 24, to begin another three-game set with Southern Maryland. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders).

Lancaster 5, York 3

YORK, Pa. - The York Revolution must be tempted to call 30 Major League teams about a particular opposing first baseman/DH.

Kelly Dugan slammed a pair of home runs early Thursday to lead the Lancaster Barnstormers to a 5-3 victory over the York Revolution in the rubber game of a three-game series at People’s Bank Park in York.

They were the sixth and seventh homers for Dugan against the Revolution in eight games he has played this year.  The Californian has knocked in 19 runs in the season series.

Dugan broke a 3-3 tie with his leadoff shot to right against Marandy Gonzalez (0-2) in the fifth inning and provided insurance with a bomb to the hillside in right center off reliever Duke von Schamann in the seventh.

He also keyed the three-run first for Lancaster.  Melvin Mercedes led off the morning with a walk and took third on a single by LeDarious Clark.  Clark stole second before Dugan rifled a single into right, scoring one.  Andretty Cordero brought Clark across with a single to right center before Gonzalez settled in.  The third Lancaster run scored on a ground out by Anderson Feliz.

York recovered against Nile Ball (1-1).  Nellie Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to start the second, took second on a one-out passed ball.  JC Encarnacion singled to left to advance Rodriguez to third, and the run scored on an infield single to the hole on the right side by Jack Kenley.

Rodriguez opened the fourth with a homer to right center.  Only a double play off Encarnacion’s bat kept the Revs from a big inning, but the hosts still produced a second run on a single to the base of the wall in left by catcher Paul Mondesi.

Ball worked six innings.  West Tunnell retired six of seven to hold the lead, and Josh Graham picked up his second save with a perfect ninth.

The Barnstormers travel to Lexington, Kentucky later today to open a three-game series against the Wild Health Genomes on Friday evening, the first meetings between the two clubs.  Cameron Gann (1-2) will make the start for Lancaster.

NOTES:  Dugan is temporarily tied for second in the league with eight homers and is also tied for second with 25 RBI, pending the outcome of tonight’s ALPB action…He has appeared in only 19 games…Clark has hit safely in 12 straight after his first inning single…Mercedes walked three times and has 22 on the year…Lancaster did not ground into a double play for the seventh straight game…Ball threw Lancaster’s fourth quality start of the season.

High Point 7, Lexington 5
 

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point Rockers rapped out 18 hits and cruised past the Lexington Legends 7-5 on Thursday night at Truist Point.

MLB veteran Michael Martinez led the Rockers with four hits, all singles, while DH Jerry Downs collected three hits. High Point starting pitcher Justin Nicolino earned his fourth win of the year with 5.1 inning of work including seven strikeouts.

High Point scored three times in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Martinez singled to start the frame and scored on a triple by Chris Proctor. Giovanny Alfonzo followed with an RBI single as did Johnny Field. The Rockers made it 4-0 in the fourth when Downs singled and scored on a ground out by Proctor.

The Legends got on the board in the fourth when Isaias Tejeda singled and scored on a single by Montrell Marshall. Courtney Hawkins’ solo homer in the fifth, his league-leading ninth blast of the year, made it a 4-2 game.

The Rockers put up single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Giovanny Alfonzo doubled and scored on a Jay Gonzalez single in the fifth and Downs singled and scored on a Michael Russell single in the sixth to make it a 6-2 game.

Nicolino went 5.1 innings and scattered six hits while striking out seven in earning his fourth win of the season.

The Rockers extended the lead to 7-3 with three consecutive singles, the final one by Aklinski that drove home Jay Gonzalez.

The Legends tallied twice in the top of the ninth off High Point closer Chasen Bradford. Tillman Pugh hit a two-run homer to account for the 7-5 final score.

The Rockers will remain at home through the weekend and will start a three-game series with the Staten Island FerryHawks. The first game is set for Friday at 6:35 p.m. at Truist Point. The FerryHawks feature the only woman playing professional baseball in Kelsie Whitmore.

Kentucky 10, Charleston 9 (11 inn)

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky’s Anderson Miller singled hom Luke Becker in the bottom of the 11^th winning to give the Wild Health Genomes a 10-9 win over visiting Charleston on Thursday night.

The extra inning win capped a wild game in which Charleston held an early lead of 3-0 before Kentucky took an 8-3 lead into the top of the ninth. That’s when the Dirty Birds exploded for five runs to force extra innings. The ninth started with a Nick Longhi triple before he scored on a single by Engel Beltre. Yovan Gonzalez delivered a two run single before Scott Burcham hit a two-run homer to know the game.

Tied at eight, the two clubs played a scoreless 10^th before Charleston took a 9-8 lead in the top of the 11^th when aGonzalez sacrifice fly scored Diego Goris.

The Wild Health Genomes tied the game in the bottom of the 11^th when Robbie Kellerman hit a sac bun to move Carlos Castro to third. After a walk to Luke Becker, Cleuluis Rondon reached base on a fielding error allowing Castro to score and bringing Miller to the plate for his heroics.

Luis Guzman (1-0) earned the win for Kentucky while Max Tannenbaum (0-1)  was hit with the loss for Charleston.

Gastonia 13, Southern Maryland 1

GASTONIA, N.C. – The Gastonia Honey Hunters snapped Southern Maryland’s eight-game winning streak with a 13-1 win on Thursday night at CaroMont Health Park.

Gastonia started with a five-run outburst in the second inning on a two-run homer by Luis Castro, a two-run double from Alex Holderbach and a Jack Reinheimer RBI double.

The Honey Hunters added another five runs in the seventh on a Luis Roman RBI double, an RBI single from Reece Hampton, a two-run double by Rayder Ascanio and a run-scoring single from Herlis Rodriguez.

Southern Maryland starter McKenzie Mills (2-1) took the loss while Jerry Keel (2-0) was credited with the win.

Six different Honey Hunters managed a pair of hits with Ascanio collecting a pair of doubles while Castro finished with three RBI and two home runs.
