Bluefish sign pair of lefties
(Bridgeport, Conn., March 14, 2017) – The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced that pitchers Drake Britton and Alex Burgos will join the team for the 2017 season.
“Drake and Alex are going to add a depth to our pitching staff that will carry us through the season,” says Bluefish General Manager Paul Herrmann. “These two are great additions to the team and we’re excited to have them.”
Drake Britton joins the Bluefish during his tenth season of professional baseball and first in the Atlantic League. Last season, the former Major Leaguer pitched for Triple-A Toledo (Detroit) of the International League. In 37 games, the lefty collected a 4.57 ERA with 17 strikeouts across 41.1 innings. The 27-year-old was originally drafted in 2007 by the Boston Red Sox in the 23rd round of the MLB draft, and made his professional debut with Short-Season-A Lowell of the New York Penn League the following year. He spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Red Sox organization, playing for the big league team in both 2013 and 2014. In 25 games with the Red Sox, he earned one victory with a 2.93 ERA with 21 strikeouts across 27.2 innings. In 216 career minor league games, Drake has a 4.68 ERA with 514 strikeouts in 634.0 innings of work.
Alex Burgos comes to Bridgeport for his Atlantic League debut and eighth season of professional baseball. Last year, he spent time in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, spending most of his time with High-A Rancho Cucamonga of the California League and also appearing with Single-A Great Lakes of the Midwest League and Double-A Tulsa of the Texas League. In 27 combined games, the lefty earned a 5-0 record with a 2.76 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 49.0 innings. The 26-year-old began his professional career in 2010 after being selected by the Detroit Tigers in the fifth round of the MLB draft. He spent five seasons with the Tigers organization, reaching the Triple-A level in 2014. In 165 career minor league games, Alex has a 3.29 ERA with 364 strikeouts in 451.0 innings of work.
