(Tuesday, May 23, York) Consistency is a big word used in baseball; the Blue Crabs have been looking for consistency in their lineup after going three games and scoring just one run. Finally, on Sunday, the lineup woke up and scored 15 runs; they would perform similarly to begin the six-game road trip. 

It didn't take long, as the Crabs got a jolt from a three-run homer from Isaias Quiroz in the second inning, the first since joining the team a few days ago. The next inning saw the Crabs score five more times, two from an Alex Crosby single, another from a Jose Rosario double, and finally capped off by another Quiroz home run. Chasing Starting Pitcher Jorge Martinez out of the game and the DH.     

The Revs would score two in the bottom of the fourth, but that's all they would get against the Blue Crabs' pitching staff. Braxton Lee hit an opposite-field home run for his third of the year, and Michael Wielansky would hit his team-leading seventh home run as the Blue Crabs built a 14-2 lead and cruised to their third straight win.   

The offense for Southern Maryland has combined for 29 runs and 32 hits in the last two games; everyone in the starting lineup in the past couple of games has also reached base. Daryl Thompson went seven innings, allowed four hits, two earned runs, no walks, and five strikeouts. The win moves him to 94 in his career in the Atlantic League.     

The Blue Crabs are looking to win another series; the left-hander Sandro Cabrera is scheduled to start against JT Hintzen. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35; the entire game will be streaming on FloSports.   

Gastonia 6, Frederick 0

The kind of power surge that Frederick has become accustomed to was not in the cards on Tuesday night, as they were shut out for the second time on the year, 6-0 by the Gastonia Honey Hunters. 

Gastonia got the scoring started early when Braxton Davidson homered to right field, his first hit with Gastonia, to drive in two.

In the third inning, the Honey Hunters strung together three two-out hits, the third of which was an RBI double by Steven Sensley, which made it 3-0 Gastonia.

Both offenses were quiet until the seventh inning, when Jack Reinheimer led off with a home run to left field. Later in the frame, back-to-back doubles were slugged by Zach Jarrett and Carlos Franco, with Franco's plating another run. The night would keep rolling for Franco in the ninth, blasting a solo home run to right field to finish the rout at 6-0. Franco finished with four hits, three of which were for extra bases.

Jaime Schultz closed the door to complete the shutout in the ninth, working around a one-out single by Johnni Turbo. 

Alex Sanabia was the star of the night, tossing seven scoreless innings on the mound, allowing just three hits and striking out four.

Frederick will look to even the series on Wednesday when David Kubiak squares off against Zack Godley with a 7 PM first pitch.

Long Island 9, Staten Island 3

(Staten Island, N.Y., May 23, 2023) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Staten Island FerryHawks 9-3 on Tuesday evening in the opener of a three-game midweek series at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.

Long Island took an early 1-0 lead against Staten Island starting pitcher Austin DeCarr just four batters into the ballgame thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sam Travis that plated Boog Powell after he opened up the contest with a walk. The Ducks sent nine batters to the plate in the second and scored six more times for a 7-0 advantage, highlighted by a two-run double from Powell, a two-run base knock produced by Adeiny Hechavarria, and an RBI single tallied by Alex Dickerson. 

The FerryHawks scored a pair of runs in the in the home half of the sixth frame off Ducks starter Ian Clarkin to cut the deficit to 8-2 thanks to an RBI double from Kevin Krause and a run-scoring single from Roldani Baldwin. An Adrian Sanchez double play with the bases loaded and nobody out got Staten Island to within 8-3 in the seventh, but Dustin Woodcock put the game away in the eighth with a one-out solo home run to right center field for his fifth big fly of the season.

Clarkin (1-1) collected the win, firing six innings of two-run baseball, allowing four hits and a pair of walks while striking out six. DeCarr (0-4) was tagged with the loss, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on six hits and three walks in two innings on the mound.

Dickerson led the Flock offensively with three hits and a run batted in. 

The Ducks and FerryHawks continue their three-game set on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park. HIGH POINT, N.C. – In both games on Tuesday evening, the Lancaster Barnstormers struck first.

In both games, they did not score again.

High Point got a walkoff single from Michael Martinez in the bottom of the eighth in the opener, and overcame a 2-0 deficit in the second game to win, 4-2, in a doubleheader sweep over the Barnstormers at Truist Point.

In the second game, Kelly Dugan led off the Lancaster second with a double to left.  Designated pinch runner Jake Hoover raced home when Trayvon Robinson followed with another two-bagger into the left field corner off Neil Uskali (1-0).  Two outs later, Robinson strode home on a single to left by Jack Conley.

Uskali and the High Point bullpen kept the Barnstormers hitless for the remainder of the game.

Nile Ball (0-1) yielded a leadoff double to D.J. Burt in the third.  He moved up on an out and scored on a wild pitch.  One inning later, Zander Wiel drilled a two-out double off the wall in left and came home with the tying run on a single into center by Ben Aklinski.

Burt tripled to right center field opening the fifth inning.  Following a walk to Ryan Grotjohn, pinch runner John Daly scored on a sacrifice fly to right center by Dai Kang Yoh for a 3-2 lead.  An unearned run scored in the sixth for insurance. 

Ryan Dull worked a perfect seventh for his fifth save.

After the Barnstormers failed to score Jack Conley from second base in the top of the eighth in Game One, the Rockers wasted no time to put the game in their pockets.  Michael Russell’s single to center moved Daly to third, and Martinez singled as well off Mike Adams (0-1) to score the game winner.

Through the first seven innings, Mickey Jannis and Jared Lakind dueled to a 1-1 tie.  Jannis yielded a run in the top of the second on a triple to left center by Robinson and Chris Proctor’s topper up the first base line.  The knuckleballer allowed three hits and a run while walking one and striking out seven.

Lakind surrendered five hits, one a leadoff homer in the fourth by Zander Wiel.  He walked three and struck out seven in tossing his third straight quality start.

Jeremy Rhoades (4-0) pitched the top of the eighth to earn the Rockers’ win.

The two clubs conclude the three-game series on Wednesday at 6:35.  Fans may tune into FloBaseball beginning at 6:30 for the play-by-play action.

NOTES:  Lakind dropped his season ERA to 2.20…Lancaster is 0-9 in one-run games…High Point has won 30 of 42 regular season meetings against the ‘Stormers…Robinson’s triple, the 16^th of his career, made him the leader among active Atlantic League players.
