Gastonia 15, High Point 0

The Gastonia Honey Hunters had a record setting night at Caromont Health Park, pummeling the High Point Rockers 15-0 before an announced crowd of nearly 3,500.

Alex Sanabia, the newly acquired starting pitcher from the York Revolution, made his Honey Hunters debut. Sanabia entered the contest with a 4-5 record on the season with York, charting a 4.86 ERA in his time in Pennsylvania.

Neil Uskali made the start for High Point, sporting a 4-3 mark with a 3.86 ERA for the Rockers. Uskali was making his fifth start of the season against Gastonia, with a 1-1 record against the southernmost team in the South Division.

Sanabia made quite an impression in his debut, completing six shutout innings while allowing just two hits.

Sanabia was brilliant. Efficiently so. He threw 82 pitches and seemed in complete control of his surroundings. On the night, he struck out three Rockers and surrendered just one walk.

In spite of Sanabia´s stellar outing, he may have been outdone by a 21-hit attack that saw four players log three hit games. The club slugged double digit extra-base hits for the first time this season, as Gastonia had six doubles, a triple and four homers.

Jack Reinheimer was a homer shy of the cycle. Emmanuel Tapia hit a homer and a pair of singles to go with three RBI. Joseph Rosa had three hits, including a pair of doubles. Zach Jarrett had three hits including a homer.

Every starter in the game collected a safety for Gastonia, as well as Jaylen Smith, who came on to pinch-hit in the eighth.

Sanabia picked up the win for Gastonia, pushing his record to 5-5 on the season.

Uskali suffered through a difficult night, allowing five earned runs on eleven hits in five frames to absorb the loss.

Gastonia (73-33,27-12) continues the three-game set against High Point on Saturday at 6:15pm, as Zach Godley goes against Craig Stem.

Long Island 9, York 2

(York, Pa., Aug. 19, 2022) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the York Revolution 9-2 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at PeoplesBank Park.

 Long Island jumped in front 2-0 in the first inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Deibinson Romero and Carlos Castro off Revolution starter Ben Herrick. Phil Caulfield’s RBI fielder’s choice in the second and Joe DeCarlo’s solo home run over the Arch Nemesis in the fourth doubled the Ducks lead to four.

 Deibinson Romero's second RBI single of the night pushed the Ducks lead up to 5-0 in the fifth. Lew Ford then drove a two-run home run over the right field fence in the sixth to make it a 7-0 ballgame.

 York cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth on Telvin Nash's RBI single to right field off Duck starter Akeel Morris. Connor Lien’s solo homer to left in the seventh closed the gap to 7-2. However, an RBI double down the left field line by Romero and a wild pitch that scored Alejandro De Aza restored the Ducks seven-run lead at 9-2.

 Morris (5-9) earned the win, tossing six innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out five. Herrick (0-1) took the loss, conceding five runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks over four and one-third innings with two strikeouts.

 Ford led the Flock offensively with three hits, finishing a triple shy of the cycle, two RBIs and three runs. Romero added three hits, three RBIs and a walk for Long Island.

 The Ducks and Revolution continue their three-game set on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at PeoplesBank Park. Charleston 8, Lancaster 4

Two guys who started the night batting below .200 were never retired.

 Nick Heath (.197) and Angel Garced (.160) combined to go 6-for-6 with three walks to lead the Charleston Dirty Birds to an 8-4 win over the Lancaster Barnstormers Friday evening at Appalachian Power Park.

 It was the fourth consecutive loss for the Barnstormers on their current road trip and, with Southern Maryland winning at home, cut the North lead to 1 ½ games.

 All four Lancaster runs scored in the top of the sixth.  With the ‘Stormers down, 2-0, Andretty Cordero reached on an error by second baseman Scott Kelly.  Trayvon Robinson followed with a single to right center.  Both scored when Jacob Barfield launched a double into the left center gap.  Ariel Sandoval singled home the lead run on a base hit to center and stole second.  Anthony Peroni drilled a single into left center than Devon Torrence barely missed catching.

 That sequence chased starter Michael Gunn from the game.  Dondrei Hubbard grounded into a force to get a fourth run home for a 4-2 advantage, but Lancaster could do no more against Nate Peden (3-1, 3-4).

 Charleston recovered all the runs in the bottom of the inning.  Dominic DiSabatino struck out two of the first three batters, and Lancaster barely missed getting Torrence on a steal attempt.  Yovan Gonzalez grounded a single up the middle to cut the lead to 4-3.  DiSabatino walked Garced before departing.  Scott Kelly greeted Cam Booser with a ground ball on the left side that took a low skip under the glove of third baseman Andretty Cordero as the tying run scored.  Garced and Kelly moved up on Robinson’s throw home.  Both scored on Heath’s ground single up the middle, his third hit of the night.

Heath put the game away with a two-run triple to left center in the eighth inning following a dropped throw and single by Garced.  The center fielder drove in five runs total.

 Lancaster will take on the Dirty Birds again on Saturday.  Brooks Hall (2-1) will mark his return, taking on left-hander Denson Hull (2-7).  Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube channel, starting at 6:30.

 NOTES:  Sandoval extended a hitting streak to 14 games with a pair of singles…Peroni’s hitting streak stands at eight…Lancaster has lost its last three to Charleston…Former Lancaster reliever Ricardo Gomez closed out the game for Charleston…It was his 377th Atlantic League appearance with five different teams….He broke Ross Peeples’ career mark of 374 several days ago.
