Lancaster 3, Staten Island 1

After his start was rained out on Thursday, Erik Manoah was reinserted into the Lancaster starting rotation on Saturday.  The right-hander pitched a three-hitter over six innings, leading the Barnstormers to a 3-1 victory over the Staten Island Ferryhawks in the middle game of a three-game series at SIUH Community Park.

 Manoah (3-1) struck out seven and walked one.  The only run he surrendered came with controversy.   Leading off the fourth inning, Rusney Castillo launched a fly ball down the right field line.  First base umpire Federico De Jesus signaled that the ball was fair.  The Barnstormers argued, and second baseman Melvin Mercedes was ejected in the discussion.

 Meanwhile, Andretty Cordero supplied the bulk of the offense.  In the third, Shawon Dunston, Jr. opened with a single off Matt Solter (3-8).  A grounder by Mercedes sent him to second.  Dunston took third as a pitch trickled away from catcher Andrew Noriega.  Cordero singled up the middle to produce the run.

 Cordero delivered an insurance run in the top of the seventh.  Trace Loehr singled and advanced to second on a grounder by Dunston.  One out later, Cordero lined his third single of the night into center for a 3-1 lead.

 Lancaster’s other run came in the form of Chris Proctor’s first home run of the season, a line drive to right that led off the fourth.

 Gray Fenter took over in the seventh and pitched the remainder of the game for Lancaster.  The right-hander, preparing for an eventual start, yielded one single and struck out six.  He was charged with two wild pitches, one of which allowed Ricardo Cespedes to reach base in the seventh.  It was Fenter’s first save.

 The Barnstormers and Ferryhawks take the field at 4:00 on Sunday.  Nile Ball (6-3) is scheduled to pitch for Lancaster against Hector Guance (2-5).  Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube channel at 4:00.

 NOTES:  Cordero has hit safely in 35 of 40 games since June 15…He is 60-for-163 (.368) in that stretch…He has 79 RBI, 24 short of the club record with 44 games to play…Lancaster pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts and now have K’d 763 hitters in 762.1 innings this season…It was the 34th time the staff has reached double digits in strikeouts this season…Ariel Sandoval lost a seven-game hitting streak.

High Point 12, Southern Maryland 10
WALDORF, Md. – The High Point Rockers won their third straight game as Michael Russell collected four hits and scored four runs and Jerry Downs and Cesar Trejo each drove in a pair of runs in a 12-10 win over Southern Maryland at Regency Furniture Stadium on Saturday night.

The Rockers scored once in the first inning without making contact with the ball. Southern Maryland starter Adrian Cook walked Russell to start the inning. After Ben Aklinski was called out on strikes, Cook walked Downs before striking out Zander Wiel. Another walk to Quincy Latimore loaded the bases before Logan Morrison drew an RBI walk that scored Russell.

In the second, Cook walked Mike Gulino with one out and Russell’s double to center brought home High Point’s second run of the night. Aklinski then singled to move Russell to third before he scored on a groundout by Jerry Downs.

High Point extended its lead to 6-0 in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Ladendorf, an RBI double by Alfonzo and a pair of Blue Crab errors that allowed Alfonzo to score from second.

In the bottom of the third, Southern Maryland’s Braxton Lee homered off High Point starter Sam Burton, scoring Michael Baca and Michael Wielansky to pull the ‘Crabs within three at 6-3. In the fourth, Michael Falsetti homered with two men on to tie the game at 6-6. Southern Maryland took an 8-6 lead with a pair of runs in the fifth off High Point reliever Nathan Bates (W, 1-0) coming on a Lee RBI double and an RBI ground out by Jared Walker.

The Rockers went back on top in the sixth when Jerry Downs singled to score Michael Russell and Cesar Trejo delivered a two-run double.

The Rockers scored twice in the top of the eighth for a 12-8 lead when Gulino walked to lead things off and moved to second on a single by Russell. Aklinski drew a walk from Southern Maryland reliever Patrick Baker to load the bases. Gulino scored on a passed ball before Wiel singled to plate Russell. Wiel then stole second and another passed ball allowed Aklinski to score.

Southern Maryland tallied twice in the ninth off High Point closer Ryan Dull. Matt Hibbert’s double scored two and pulled the Blue Crabs to within a pair of runs at 12-10 but Dull induced a fly ball to center from pinch-hitter Mat Latos and Aklinski made a diving catch to end the game.

Dalton Geekie (L, 1-2) allowed three runs in the sixth and was tagged with the loss for Southern Maryland.

Burton went four innings and allowed six runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Bates allowed two runs on two hits in his one inning of work. Cam Cotter worked a scoreless sixth and Bryce Hensley did the save in the seventh.

High Point and Southern Maryland will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at 2 pm at Regency Furniture Stadium.

Long Island 3, Kentucky 1

(Lexington, Ky., July 30, 2022) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Kentucky Wild Health Genomes 3-1on Saturday night in the second of a three-game weekend series from Wild Health Field.

 Long Island jumped out in front 1-0 versus Kentucky Wild Health starting pitcher Robby Scott in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a run-scoring single to right center field produced by Carlos Castro that plated Sam Travis after he drew a walk earlier in the frame with one man down. The Genomes tied the game at one in the bottom of the sixth against Ducks starter Stephen Tarpley as the southpaw saw his no-hitter and shutout erased with one big swing of the bat courtesy of a solo home run to left off the bat of Khris Davis.

 The Flock took a 2-1 advantage in the eighth off Kentucky Wild Health reliever Akeem Bostick thanks to a two-out, run scoring bae knock from Joe DeCarlo that scored Alejandro De Aza after he began the rally with a single of his own to lead off the inning. The visitors added a big insurance run in the top of the ninth as L.J. Mazzilli plated Kevin Whatley with an RBI single to left after Whatley drew a leadoff free pass.

 Both starters tallied no-decisions despite each registering quality starts. Tarpley allowed one run on one hit (one home run) in six innings pitched, walking three while striking out six. Scott gave up one run on four hits across six and two-thirds innings on the mound, walking three while striking out seven. Jose Jose (1-0) tallied his first win as a member of the Ducks after firing two scoreless innings on no hits given up, walking one and striking out four. Bostick (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up one run on three hits in one inning pitched. Tyler Webb retired all three batters he faced in the ninth for his team-leading ninth save overall. Carlos Castro led the way offensively with a pair of hits and a run batted in along with a stolen base.

 The Ducks and Genomes conclude their three-game set on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. at Wild Health Field.  Long Island returns home on Friday, August 12, to begin a three-game set against the Charleston Dirty Birds. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders).

York at Gastonia, PPD

Saturday night's game between York and Gastonia was washed out and will be made as a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon, beginning at 2:15pm. In the top of the third inning, a strong rain storm originating from the Lake Wylie area headed north and dumped copious rainfall on Caromont Health Park. Significant lightning accompanied the storm and was being trailed by numerous other showers, prompting the stoppage of play.
