York 6, Gastonia 2

Telvin Nash and Carlos Franco hit two run homers to support Nick Travieso´s quality start, beating the Gastonia Honey Hunters 6-2 at Peoples Bank Park in York on Thursday afternoon.

The win for York salvages a game from Gastonia and ends the 13 game win streak of the Honey Hunters. It is the second streak of 10-plus games that York has stopped in their home ballpark.

York got rolling early, as Telvin Nash hit his second homer of the year, giving York a 2-0 lead.

After York tacked on a run in the second, the Revolution would close out their scoring in the fourth as Elmer Reyes picked up an RBI double to stretch the lead to 4-0. One batter later, Franco hit his 26th long ball of the season, opening the gap to 6-0.

From there, Travieso had all he needed. 

Travieso got into the seventh inning, allowing only one run in his outing. The York right-hander scattered five hits, walked one and struck out seven on the day to move his record to 4-5 on the year.

Reilly Hovis(5-3) was saddled with the loss, pitching six frames for Gastonia(57-22,13-1), who lost for the first time in the second half of the 2022 schedule.

Tomorrow, Gastonia travels to High Point, as the Honey Hunters take on the Rockers in a three game weekend set. First pitch is set for 6:35pm, as the Honey Hunters Radio Network brings the pregame show at 6:20pm. Charleston 9, Lancaster 5

The night started off in a bad way, and the Lancaster Barnstormers never quite recovered.

 Charleston’s first four batters either walked or were hit by a pitch, leading to three runs as the Dirty Birds defeated the host Barnstormers, 9-5, in the finale of a six-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.  Each team picked up three wins over the course of the week.

 Augie Sylk (4-8) came out on a medical exit during the fourth batter.  Bret Clarke allowed two runs on ground balls before finally getting out of the inning, and the right-hander kept Lancaster in the game until the fourth.  The Barnstormers got one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Melvin Mercedes lined a homer off the tents in right field to extend his hitting streak to 18 games.

 Clarke faded in the fifth.  Scott Kelly led off with a single into center, and Alfredo Gonzalez lined an RBI double off the wall in right center.  One out later, Diego Goris continued the attack with a single to left to make it 5-1.  Following a force out, Yovan Gonzalez lined a two-run homer onto the right field deck for a 7-1 lead.

 A sac fly by Kelly and RBI single by Alfredo Gonzalez in the eighth pushed the lead to 9-1.

Andretty Cordero slugged a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, and Trace Loehr followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 9-5, but the Barnstormers left the bases loaded later in the inning as Devon Torrence rolled into a 3-1 ground out.

 Gavin Weyman (1-0) pitched the middle three innings to earn the win after pitching coach Joe Testa tossed three shutout innings to start the game.

 Lancaster heads to York to open a three-game series on Friday with a special start time of 10:00 PM.  Cameron Gann (5-6) will make the start for Lancaster against right-hander Jorge Martinez (7-4).  Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube channel, starting at 9:55.

 NOTES:  Mercedes is now within two games of the franchise record hitting streak…Alfredo Gonzalez finished the series with five homers and 16 RBI…Cordero extended his hitting streak to seven and now leads the league with 107 hits…He has 71 RBI for the year, 32 away from Aaron Herr’s club record.

Lexington 11, High Point 6
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The High Point Rockers dropped an 11-6 decision to the Lexington Legends in the rubber match of the three-game series at Wild Health Field on Thursday night. The game was scheduled for seven innings due to the lack of available pitching for both teams.

The loss gives the Rockers a 41-38 overall record and a 2-12 record in the second half.

The Rockers fell behind 3-0 in the second inning when High Point starter Liam O’Sullivan (L, 0-2) allowed a single to Jordany Valdespin, an RBI double by Rusber Estrada, an RBI double by Montrell Marshall and a run-scoring single by Boog Powell.

High Point made it a 3-2 game with a pair of runs in the fourth. Zander Wiel singled, Jerry Downs hit a ground-rule double and Quincy Latimore delivered a two-run single.

Lexington extended its lead to 4-2 in the fourth on a solo homer by Powell and then put up five runs in the fifth inning off O’Sullivan and reliever Chasen Bradford. Estrada and Cesar Cuevas each doubled, Powell delivered an RBI single and Phillip Ervin hit a two-run homer.

The Rockers rallied with four runs in the sixth inning starting when Chris Proctor drew a bases-loaded walk from Legends starter Thomas Dorminy (W, 5-3). Michael Russell doubled home two runs and Ben Aklinski sent an RBI single to left to pull the Rockers within three runs at 9-6.

Marshall hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Jonathon Crawford to put the Legends up 11-6.

The Rockers threatened in the seventh. Downs hit a one-out double, his third hit of the night off Legends reliever Austin Adams. Giovanny Alfonzo and Proctor drew walks to load the bases with two outs. But Adams was able to fan pinch-hitter Jay Gonzalez for the final out of the game.

High Point will return home on Friday to start a three-game series with South Division leader Gastonia. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Truist Point. The Rockers will celebrate Christmas in July, presented by Old Dominion Freight Lines. Any fan can receive a free outfield ticket by bringing three or more canned goods for donation to the Salvation Army.

Southern Maryland 11, Long Island 10

7/21/2022, Waldorf MD) The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs completed the sweep at home over the Long Island Ducks, clawing their way back from down seven in the first.  Ian Yetsko had a massive game tonight, with a home run, double, and the game-winning single in the eighth. 

 In the first inning, the Blue Crabs’ starter, Adrian Cook, ran into trouble.  Cook recorded one out but allowed seven runs before Dario Polanco entered for Southern Maryland.  Polanco dominated, allowing only one run across four and two-thirds innings. 

 The Blue Crabs scored one run in the bottom of the first, before surrendering a run in the top of the second inning, trailing the Ducks 8-1.  In the bottom of the second, the Blue Crabs started the comeback.  Jack Sundberg punched a single into center, before Ian Yetsko destroyed a two-run home run over the Mini Monster, cutting the deficit to 8-3. 

 The Blue Crabs’ big inning came in the fourth, scoring five runs and tying the game.  With runners on first and second, David Harris knocked a base hit into center, scoring Yetsko to cut the Ducks’ lead to 8-4.  Alex Crosby then crushed a double to deep center, scoring Zach Collier and David Harris, getting the Blue Crabs back within two.   Jared Walker kept the rally going with an automatic double over the wall in left-center, scoring Crosby.  The Blue Crabs tacked on another run with a sac fly, tying the game at 8-8. 

 In the bottom of the fifth, the Blue Crabs took a 9-8 lead, but Long Island responded in the sixth, tying the score at 9-9. 

 Meanwhile, Dalton Geekie pitched the seventh for Southern Maryland, before Patrick Baker entered in the eighth.  Baker (W, 4-1) surrendered one run while striking out two, giving the Ducks a 10-9 edge.   

 The Blue Crabs got the lead back in the eighth inning off of Nick Goody (L, 0-2) (BS, 3).  The Blue Crabs had runners on the corners and no outs when Mike Falsetti grounded into a double play, which scored Matt Hibbert from third and tied the game at 10-10.  From there, Jack Sundberg walked and stole second base.  The next batter, Ian Yetsko drove a base hit into left, scoring Sundberg to give the Blue Crabs an 11-10 lead. 

 In the ninth, Endrys Briceno (S, 7) pitched another 1-2-3 inning, striking out two batters to secure the 11-10 victory.  With the Blue Crabs' win, they move to 58-23 on the season and 10-5 in the second half, one game back from the Lancaster Barnstormers in the second half.  The Blue Crabs will travel to Long Island for three more games against the Ducks, starting tomorrow at 6:35 pm.
