Long Island's Deven Marrero Has Contract Purchased

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 25, 2022) – The Long Island Ducks today announced that infielder Deven Marrero’s contract has been purchased by the New York Mets organization. He will report to the team’s Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, N.Y.

“We would like to congratulate Deven on this opportunity with the Mets organization,” said Ducks President/GM Michael Pfaff. “His goal has always been to make it back to the Major Leagues, and we wish him the best of luck on his journey.”

Marrero appeared in 50 games for the Ducks this season. He compiled a .238 batting average with one home run, 21 RBIs, 17 runs, 38 hits, seven doubles, 22 walks, five stolen bases and a .330 on-base percentage. He was especially strong in the friendly confines of Fairfield Properties Ballpark, hitting .333 with a .438 on-base percentage in 26 home games. The Miami native put together a 16-game on-base streak from May 25 to June 10, in which he batted .377 (20-for-53) with eight RBIs, nine runs, 10 walks and a .477 on-base percentage.

The 31-year-old will be looking to return to the Major Leagues after spending parts of six seasons in The Show from 2015-21). He played three seasons with the Boston Red Sox (2015-17), one with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2018) and two with the Miami Marlins (2019, 2021). In that time, he appeared in 173 games, totaling six home runs, 38 RBIs, 55 runs, 65 hits, 10 doubles, one triple, 11 stolen bases and 26 walks. The Arizona State University alum was originally selected by the Red Sox in the first round (24th overall pick) of the 2012 amateur draft.

Marrero is the second member of the 2022 Ducks to have his contract purchased by a Major League organization, joining right-handed pitcher Brett Kennedy (Red Sox, May 24). The Ducks saw 11 players have their contract purchased by an MLB club or foreign professional league in 2021, and three others signed with Major League organizations following the conclusion of the 2021 season (Ty Kelly, Dodgers; Matt Vogel, Orioles; Rob Griswold, Braves). A franchise record 15 Ducks had their contract purchased during the 2019 season.

The Long Island Ducks are members of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, a Professional Partner League of Major League Baseball. Over 8 million fans have enjoyed the Ducks brand of affordable, fun entertainment at Fairfield Properties Ballpark since inception in 2000.
