Long Island 9, High Point 7

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 21, 2022) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the High Point Rockers 9-7 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.

 Johnni Turbo gave the Ducks an immediate 1-0 lead with a leadoff solo home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning off Rockers starter Jonah Scolaro. Turbo’s two-out RBI single to right in the second doubled the Ducks lead to two.

 Two more runs came home for Long Island in the third on Deibinson Romero’s RBI double to center and Vladimir Frias’ RBI infield single to third. Zander Wiel got the Rockers on the scoreboard in the fourth with a leadoff solo homer to left-center off Ducks starter Joe Iorio. However, a trio of runs scored for the Ducks in the bottom of the fourth increased the Ducks advantage to 7-1. Turbo scored on a wild pitch, Sam Travis lined an RBI single to left and Joe DeCarlo lifted a sacrifice fly to center.

 High Point closed to within 7-3 in the fifth on RBI singles by Logan Morrison and Ben Aklinski. Long Island got the runs back though in the bottom of the frame on L.J. Mazzilli’s RBI single and a passed ball that plated Turbo. The Rockers rallied for four runs in the ninth on Morrison’s RBI single to left and Wiel’s three-run homer to left, but they were unable to pull even.

 Iorio collected the win, tossing five innings of three-run ball, allowing five hits and three walk while striking out two. Scolaro suffered the loss, conceding seven runs on 11 hits and two walks over three innings with one strikeout.

 Turbo led the Flock offensively with three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored. Alejandro De Aza added three hits, two runs and a walk.

 The Ducks and Rockers continue their three-game set on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders).

Staten Island 4, Southern Maryland 1

(Staten Island, June 21, 2022) The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs lost to the Staten Island FerryHawks for the first time in franchise history on Tuesday Night. Southern Maryland managed only a single run on a rainy night in New York, dropping the series opener by a score of 4-1.

The Blue Crabs, the team with the best record in the Atlantic League will have to wait at least one more day to secure a playoff spot.

Staten Island’s pitching staff compiled 15 strikeouts in the contest, including eight from starting pitcher Hector Guance (1-0). The number one overall pick in the Atlantic League Showcase Draft has now pitched 11 total innings in the Atlantic League, giving up just two runs on eight hits. He also owns a 10/3 K/BB ratio.

Guance’s only earned run came all the way back in the second inning, when Zach Collier doubled home Alex Crosby to give the Blue Crabs an early 1-0 lead.

Southern Maryland hung onto the lead until the bottom of the fourth, when the Ferryhawks plated three runs against Blue Crabs starter Eddie Butler (L, 4-2). Dilson Herrera, Ricardo Cespedes, and Andres Noriega picked up RBIs in the inning for Staten Island.

Antoine Duplantis added a homer in the bottom of the fifth, his fifth home run of the year. A .233 hitter on the season, Duplantis is slashing .278/.350/.444 against the Crabs.

Butler ultimately battled his way through seven innings of work, giving up four runs on eight hits. He struck out only three.

The Long Island Ducks won their fifth game in a row on Tuesday, meaning Southern Maryland’s magic number stays at two. The Crabs will once again look to clinch the Northern Division first half title tomorrow against Staten Island. A win over the FerryHawks coupled with a High Point win over Long Island would do just that.

Lancaster 11, York 6

(June 21, 2022 – York, Pa.):  The York Revolution opened a six-game homestand with an 11-4 loss to the Lancaster Barnstormers on Tuesday night at PeoplesBank Park.  The Barnstormers used five home runs to power their offense.

 Two batters into the game, the Barnstormers jumped ahead. A leadoff infield single by Shawon Dunston Jr. followed by a line drive homer to right from Melvin Mercedes made it 2-0.

 Mercedes came around in the second inning to do more damage, this time on a two-run single to left-center with two outs to extend the lead to 4-0. Mercedes tried to stretch it into a double, but was thrown out thanks to a heads up Nellie Rodriguez who covered second base and applied the tag. 

 The Revs cut into the Lancaster lead in the bottom of the second with Connor Lien going yard to left-center field to lead off the inning. It was Lien’s fifth with York and his first at PeoplesBank Park. Troy Stokes Jr drove in another run on an RBI ground out to third base, pulling York within 4-2.

 Kelly Dugan led off the third inning with an opposite field homer to left center field to make it 5-2 Lancaster. For Dugan, it was his 18th overall and 10th on the year against the Revs.

 Revs starter Nick Travieso settled in for the middle three innings, tossing three scoreless frames and ending his day retiring 11 of his last 13 hitters faced.

 The seventh inning was a brutal turn of events for the Revs. After the first two hitters reached, what looked to be a tailor-made double play ball hit umpire Joe DelBalso, giving Mercedes an infield hit on the umpire’s interference. Dugan’s at-bat resulted in a double play ball, although it scored a run, making it 6-2. Andretty Cordero snuck a ball just inside the left field foul pole for his eighth homer of the year, a two-run shot pushing the lead to 8-2 in favor of Lancaster.

 After two runners reached against Barnstormers starter Nile Ball in the seventh, manager Ross Peeples opted to leave his starter in to face Elmer Reyes who made him pay, yanking a two-run single into left field and cutting the deficit to 8-4. Ball followed with a fly out and his eighth strikeout to end the frame, however, completing seven innings to earn the win.

 Jhoendri Herrera came into the game in the eighth for his league leading 25th appearance. After a fly out, Colton Shaver lined one that kept carrying out to left center field and sailed over the wall for a solo homer. That gave the Barnstormers an insurance run, extending the lead to 9-4.

 York worked two walks in the home eighth against reliever Cole Aker, but the righty forced Lenin Rodriguez to pop out to shallow right field to strand two in scoring position.

 Lancaster’s barrage wouldn’t end, as with two outs in the ninth, LeDarious Clark drove a two-run long ball off the top right corner of the Arch Nemesis to push their lead to 11-4. For the Barnstormers, the five blasts topped a season-high for the team.

 Reliever Chase Johnson finished things off in the ninth despite a leadoff single from Stokes Jr., and the Barnstormers took the series opener by an 11-4 margin.

 Notes: Lien’s second inning homer expanded York’s franchise record home run streak to 19 consecutive games, with 35 being hit on that stretch.  Carlos Franco walked in the eighth inning, marking 35 straight games in which he has reached base; that passes Chris Ashby (2008) for the second-longest on-base streak in club history, trailing only Nate Espy’s 45-gamer in 2007.

Gastonia 8, Charleston 7

GASTONIA, N.C. - The Gastonia Honey Hunters got a go-ahead base hit from Luis Roman to break a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel Gastonia to an 8-7 win over Charleston on Tuesday night at Caromont Health Park. 

 John Anderson took the ball for Gastonia, seeking win number six on the season against southpaw Ryan Lawlor of Charleston. Lawlor was making his third straight start against the Honey Hunters. 

 Gastonia, who went without a homer in four straight games, got the power game going early as Herlis Rodriguez launched a lead off homer to right off Ryan Lawlor, giving Gastonia an early 1-0 lead.

 After Charleston tied the contest in the top half of the second, Stuart Levy lifted a three-run shot over the left-center field wall, giving Gastonia a 4-1 advantage.

 A Reece Hampton double scored Rayder Ascanio in the fourth, furthering the Honey Hunters' cause, moving the lead to 5-1.

 In the fifth inning, Charleston pushed across four unearned runs to know the game up at 5-5, ending the night for Anderson.

 Anderson went five innings, allowing four hits and one earned run. Anderson walked four and struck out four.

Charleston took their first lead of the game in the seventh as Corey Bird singled home Scott Kelly to make it a 6-5 ballgame.

 In the seventh, Stuart Levy left the yard a second time, getting Gastonia back to level terms at 6-6. 

 Later in the frame, Rayder Ascanio returned the lead back to Gastonia with a single to right, scoring Joseph Rosa, making it a 7-6 Gastonia lead.

 In the eighth, Charleston responded with a solo shot from Angel Garced off reliever Quintin Torres-Costa. The solo shot was his second, knotting things back up at 7-7.

 With two outs in the eighth, Levy walked to keep the inning alive for Rodriguez, who hit an infield single, advancing Levy to second.

 That set the stage for Roman, who came in for Jack Reinheimer earlier in the game. Roman would lace the single to right, scoring Levy to break the tie 8-7.

 In the ninth, Jesus Balaguer pitched a scoreless inning to secure the win for the Honey Hunters. Balaguer´s save was his eleventh of the year.

Torres-Costa claimed the win to move to 2-1 on the year. Tanner Duncan took the loss to move to 0-1 on the campaign.

 With the Gastonia win and a High Point loss tonight, the Honey Hunters sit atop the Atlantic League´s South Division, 7.5 games ahead of the second place Rockers.  

 The Honey Hunters (37-16) continue their brief three-game homestand Wednesday with game two against the Charleston Dirty Birds (23-31). First pitch is set for 6:15 pm.

Kentucky 6, Lexington 4
Lexingotn 5, Kentucky 2

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Wild Health Genomes and Lexington Legends split a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Kentucky used a five-run fourth inning to overcome a 4-1 deficit and roll to the victory. Chris Shaw and Carlos Castro each hit two-run homers off Jeff Thompson (L, 1-6) and Anderson Miller added a solo homer in the fourth.

Dustin Beggs (W, 5-3) went five innings in earning the win. Tim Peterson struck out two in the seventh for his first save of the year.

In the nightcap, the Legends exploded for four runs in the fifth en route to the 5-2 win. Courtney Hawkins hit his 20^th home run of the season, a three-run shot. Brandon Phillips singled, stole second and scored on an Isaias Tejeda RBI single. Hawkins had staked the Legends to a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the fourth.

Jalen Miller (W, 3-2) picked up the win with two shutout innings of relief. Nate Peden (L, 0-3) took the loss despite striking out six in four innings and allowing just one run.
