Talbot headed back to Indians, and Mariot headed to Mexican League
(Sugar Land, Texas, June 5, 2019) - The Sugar Land Skeeters today announced that the contract of right-hander Mitch Talbot has been purchased by the Cleveland Indians and the contract of right-hander Michael Mariot has been purchased by the Tijuana Toros of the Mexican League.
The Skeeters have had 11 contracts purchased by outside professional baseball organizations, including 10 from Major League organizations, which both lead the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. There have been a total of 28 contracts purchased by Major League and Mexican League teams from the Atlantic League this season.
The Skeeters set franchise records in 2018 with 14 contracts purchased by outside professional organizations, including 12 from MLB organizations. Both totals also led the Atlantic League last season.
Along with Mariot and Talbot, the following players have had their contracts purchased from the Skeeters this season: OF Cody Asche (Boston Red Sox), RHP Andrew Bellatti (New York Yankees), RHP Christian Bergman (Seattle Mariners), Ryan Court (Mariners), OF Courtney Hawkins (Giants), IF Will Maddox (San Francisco Giants), OF C.J. McElroy (Giants), RHP Kevin McGowan (Washington Nationals) and RHP Konner Wade (Boston Red Sox).
Talbot, 35, heads to the Indians after beginning the season with the Skeeters for a second straight year. Talbot was 1-3 with a 3.93 ERA through seven starts this season. He made five starts for the Skeeters in 2018, going 3-1 with a 1.93 ERA, before having his contract purchased by the Indians. Talbot then made 18 appearances (17 starts) with Triple-A Columbus in 2018 and went 4-5 with a 2.52 ERA and 1.158 WHIP.
The Cedar City, Utah native made his Skeeters debut in 2017 and went 9-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 21 games. Talbot made his Major League debut with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008 and also appeared with the Cleveland Indians from 2010-11. Through three Major League seasons, Talbot is 12-19 with a 5.30 ERA in 43 games (232.2 IP). In 2010, he was second on the Indians with 10 wins, third with 159 ⅓ innings pitched and third with 88 strikeouts. His 10 wins in 2010 also placed him second amongst American League rookies.
The Houston Astros drafted Talbot in the 2002 MLB Draft out of Canyon View High School (Cedar City, Utah). Along with the Astros, Rays and Indians, Talbot has also pitched at the affiliated level with the Miami Marlins and New York Mets. He’s pitched at the professional level with the Hanwha Eagles and Samsung Lions of the Korea Baseball Organization as well. Talbot first joined the Atlantic League in 2014 with the Long Island Ducks. Through 345 career appearances at the professional level, Talbot is 128-104 with a 3.92 ERA and one save in 1,848 2/3 innings pitched.
Mariot, 30, was 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA in eight games (five starts) this season. He leads the Skeeters in wins and is currently fourth in the Atlantic League with 40 strikeouts. The former Major Leaguer first appeared with the Skeeters last season, going 0-0 with a 1.93 ERA in four starts.
The Kansas City Royals selected Mariot in the eighth round of the 2010 MLB Draft out of the University of Nebraska. He appeared at the Major League level with the Royals from 2014-15 and with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2016. Mariot is 2-0 with a 5.98 ERA and two saves in 44 games at the Major League level.
The Skeeters have also signed former Major League right-hander Christian Bergman. The Seattle Mariners purchased Bergman’s contract from the Skeeters in Spring Training and Bergman was 1-3 with a 9.57 ERA in eight games (six starts) with Triple-A Tacoma this season.
Bergman, 31, has five years of Major League experience, appearing with the Colorado Rockies (2014-16) and the Seattle Mariners (2017-18). Bergman is 11-15 with a 5.59 ERA in 71 games (25 starts) at the big-league level.
The Skeeters, winners of the 2018 Atlantic League Championship, begin their eighth season of play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball at Constellation Field.
