(Central Islip, N.Y., Dec. 14, 2007) – Texas Rangers team officials today announced the signing of 2007 Long Island Ducks infielder Edgardo Alfonzo. The one-time Met fan favorite spent the entire 2007 season with the Ducks, batting .266 with 56 RBI and 23 doubles while playing shortstop and third base. The former MLB All-Star’s contract with Texas calls for up to $650,000 in 2008 if all incentives are reached.
“We’re very happy for Edgardo. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy,” says Ducks principal owner Frank Boulton. “It’s very gratifying for the Atlantic League to give another player the opportunity to return to the big leagues and we wish Fonzie the best of luck in Texas.”
Alfonzo played in 105 of the Ducks’ 126 regular season games and both of the club’s playoff games in 2007. He displayed patience at the plate, accumulating 45 walks against only 32 strikeouts, and his knack for getting the big hit, homering in the Long Island’s first playoff game against Newark. Alfonzo also showcased the solid defense that he has been lauded for throughout his career.
One of New York baseball’s all-time most popular players, Alfonzo made his Major League debut with the New York Mets in 1995 and became an instant contributor and fan favorite, earning both the cheers of the Shea Stadium crowds and a permanent role as the Mets third baseman by 1997. Edgardo posted career numbers in 2000, batting .324 with 25 homers, 40 doubles and 94 RBI. His efforts helped lead the Mets to the 2000 National League Pennant. The Venezuela native has a career .284 batting average in 1,506 major league games. His postseason numbers boast a .299 average with 22 RBI in 28 playoff contests.
The Long Island Ducks play their home games at Citibank Park, and have played eight seasons in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Season ticket packages for 2008 are currently available. For further information, visit www.liducks.com, or call (631) 940-3825.
