NEWARK, NJ, November 2—The Newark Bears will open up the 2008 regular season, and defense of their 2007 Atlantic League Championship, with a road contest against the Long Island Ducks on Friday, April the 25th, it was announced today. Four days later, on Tuesday, April the 29th, the Bears will raise their championship banner prior to the home opener against the Bridgeport Bluefish.
The Bears will be celebrating their Tenth Anniversary Season at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium in 2008. The defending champions will host 70 home games during the 2008 campaign, including visits by the Somerset Patriots, whom the Bears defeated three-games-to-one in the ’07 Atlantic League Championship Series, on May 23-25, August 8-10, and September 18-21. The league’s newest entry, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, will make their initial visit to Newark June 23-26.
The Atlantic League has expanded its schedule from 126 games to 140 for the 2008 season, marking the first time since 2005, and third time in the league’s eleven-year history, that 140 games will be played by each club.
