LANCASTER, Pa.—A large group of host Lancaster Barnstormers and several former Major Leaguers highlight the North and South teams for the 2007 Atlantic League All-Star Game, presented by Faulkner Chevrolet/Suzuki to be held July 11 at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster.
The teams for the 10th Atlantic League All-Star squad were named based upon fan voting as well as input from Atlantic League on-field staff and Atlantic League personnel.
“I want to thank all fans who voted,” Atlantic League Executive Director Joe Klein said. “This season, we’ll welcome our 17 millionth fan and I’d like to extend my gratitude for their continued support.”
First baseman Jeremy Todd, shortstop Danny Gonzalez, center fielder Jutt Hileman and catcher Lance Burkhart will represent the Barnstormers in the South Division starting lineup for the game.
Other members of the Barnstormers contingent include Dominick Ambrosini, who was added to the team as a reserve outfielder, and ace starter Josh Stevens and closer Derrick DePriest, who were named to the South pitching staff.
Former Lancaster outfielder Quincy Foster was also an overwhelming fan choice to start the game but is not available due to his recent signing by Yucatan of the Class AAA Mexican League.
Five players who have also played in a Major League All-Star Game were elected to the Atlantic League North Division squad. Junior Spivey of Bridgeport was named the Northern Division’s starting second baseman. He also played for the National League in the 2002 Major League All-Star Game while with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Four other former big league All-Stars elected this year’s North squad (but unable to participate) are from the Long Island Ducks: Edgardo Alfonzo (2000, NL, Mets), Jose Offerman (1995, NL, Dodgers; 1999, AL, Red Sox); Carl Everett (2000, AL, Red Sox; 2003, AL, White Sox) and Danny Graves (2000, 2004, NL, Reds).
Also named to the team was Somerset third baseman Jeff Nettles, who was signed by the Kansas City Royals organization on Monday, July 2. Nettles was leading the league in homers and RBI upon his departure.
“With a ten-year high at the All-Star break for players returning to affiliated baseball, our baseball operations staffs should be congratulated for maintaining what we’ve come to expect of Atlantic League baseball,” Klein said, “which is high-quality professional baseball played by talented and experienced ballplayers.”
