Supervisor of Umpires
After graduating from the Harry Wendelstedt School for Umpires in
1991, Facto spent ten seasons as an umpire in the International, Eastern,
Southern, Carolina, South Atlantic and Gulf Coast leagues. During his
six years in the International league, Mark was selected to work five
divisional playoffs, four league championships, the Triple A All-Star
and the Triple-A World Series. Facto also spent one off-season umpiring
in Hawaii.
Facto also serves as an instructor and consultant for several umpire
associations at the college, high school and youth baseball levels.
He currently resides in Ellicott City, Maryland. He can be contacted

How Do I Become an Atlantic League Umpire?
The job of a professional umpire requires quick thinking, common sense, and confidence. The successful umpire has a thorough knowledge of the Official Rules of Baseball, is even-tempered, and is mentally strong enough to handle situations under stressful conditions.
Each year the Atlantic League seeks qualified candidates to fill its umpiring positions.
These candidates have good training, a strong ability as umpires, and a keen desire to succeed.
Umpires seeking a job in the Atlantic League must meet some basic requirements. Each applicant must have:
- High School diploma or G.E.D.
- 20/20 vision (with or without glasses or contact lenses)
- Reasonable body weight
- Good communication skills
- Quick reflexes and good coordination
- Some athletic ability
- Preliminary training for the job
Since the caliber of baseball is so high in the Atlantic League, it is also preferred that each applicant has:
- A minimum of two (2) years experience in a professional baseball league or several years of Division I college experience
- Attended a professional umpire school
