Sportman and Friedrich Earn Atlantic League Monthly Honors

Outfielder named Player of the Month; Left-hander selected as Pitcher of the Month

(Lancaster, Pa., July 5, 2019) – The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (ALPB) today announced the recipients of the league’s Player and Pitcher of the Month awards for June of 2019.

York Revolution outfielder J.P. Sportman was named the Atlantic League’s Player of the Month. Sportman played in 30 games during the month of June and compiled a .354 batting average. He led the league with 45 hits, 73 total bases, 127 at bats and three triples. The 27-year-old was also tied for second in the league with 21 runs scored and 13 doubles. He totaled three homers, 21 RBIs, five stolen bases and a .379 on-base percentage for the month. Sportman hit safely in 27 consecutive games from June 4-30, accumulating the longest hitting streak in the Atlantic League this season.

Friedrich has been selected as the Atlantic League's Pitcher of the Month. He turned in five starts during the month of June and posted a perfect 3-0 record along with a 1.59 ERA that ranked second in the Atlantic League for the month. The southpaw turned in one complete game and struck out 33 batters while walking only five over 34 innings of work. In addition, opponents batted just .198 against Friedrich during the month of June. The 31-year-old surrendered just one earned run over his final three starts of the month (22.0 innings) and struck out five or more batters in each start. For his efforts, Friedrich’s contract was purchased by the NC Dinos of the Korea Baseball Organization on July 2.

“We commend both Sportman and Friedrich on putting together an outstanding month,” said Atlantic League President Rick White. “J.P. was clearly one of the top hitters throughout the league, while Christian did splendidly on the mound and was rewarded with a new opportunity to continue his baseball career overseas.”
