New Britain's Josh Thole Signed by Tigers

Catcher Josh Thole has contract purchased by Detroit Tigers

(New Britain, Conn., June 21, 2018) – New Britain Bees team officials have announced that catcher Josh Thole has had his contract purchased by the Detroit Tigers organization. He will report to Double-A Erie of the Eastern League.

“Josh was a great player and teammate for us this year,” says Bees General Manager Brad Smith. “It’s great to see him receive this opportunity and we wish him the best of luck in his journey to make it back to the Major Leagues.”

This season for the Bees, Josh appeared in 17 games and posted a .317 batting average with three doubles, 10 RBI, seven runs scored, and a .425 on-base percentage.

The 31-year-old began his professional career with the New York Mets after being selected in the 13th round of the 2005 amateur draft. After five impressive seasons in the Mets organization, he made his big league debut with New York in 2009 at the age of 22. Thole spent four years in the big leagues with the Mets, including two stints as their starting catcher in 2011 and 2012. He was then traded to the Blue Jays in 2013 in a package with Cy Young award winner R.A. Dickey for Noah Syndergaard and Travis D'Arnaud. The backstop would then spend four campaigns with Toronto. In 478 career Major League games over eight seasons, he posted a .242 batting average with 65 extra base hits, 111 RBI, and 99 runs scored.

Thole is the third Bees player to have his contract purchased during the 2018 season.
